431 Stainless Steel Bar Material boasts exceptional corrosion resistance against a broad spectrum of corrosive environments. While it offers some resistance to salt water in cooler southern waters, it is less effective in warmer tropical waters. The overall corrosion resistance of the 431 Round Bar Material is comparable to or slightly less than that of 304 Grade Material. Optimal performance is achieved when the material has a smooth surface in its hardened and tempered state.
This material resists scaling in intermittent service up to 925°C and in continuous service up to 870°C. However, it is generally not recommended for use at temperatures above the specified tempering temperature due to a reduction in mechanical properties.
Full annealing is impractical for this grade as it hardens even when cooled slowly. For Process Anneal, heat to 620-660°C and then air cool.
The material can be hardened by heating to 980-1065°C, holding for approximately 30 minutes, then quenching in air or oil. Pre-heating at 760-790°C may be beneficial for complex parts or those already hardened. Temper to meet mechanical requirements, following the temperature guidelines in the accompanying table.
Avoid tempering in the range of 425-600°C due to reduced impact toughness, although the effect is less pronounced than in most other martensitic grades.
Welding this material is challenging due to cracking risks. Pre-heating at 200-300°C is advised prior to welding. For filler rods, Grade 410 can be used, but Grades 308L, 309, or 310 will yield more ductile welds if matching properties are not required. Post-weld heat treatment at 650°C is recommended.
In its annealed condition, this grade is relatively easy to machine, but machining becomes more difficult if hardened above 30HRC. The Ugima Improved Machinability version of Grade 431 significantly enhances machining speeds and tool life.
Common applications include nuts and bolts, propeller shafting, pump shafts, beater bars, and marine hardware.
These properties are specified for bar products in ASTM A276. Similar, but not necessarily identical, properties are specified for other products like plates and forgings in their respective specifications.
