Type 201 stainless steel is an austenitic chromium-nickel-manganese alloy engineered to reduce nickel usage. As a cost-effective alternative to standard Cr-Ni stainless steels like 301 and 304, Type 201 substitutes nickel with manganese and nitrogen. It cannot be hardened by heat treatment but achieves high tensile strength through cold working. Initially non-magnetic, Type 201 becomes magnetic post cold working.
