431 Stainless Steel Bar Material boasts exceptional resistance to a diverse array of corrosive environments. While it demonstrates some tolerance to saltwater in cold southern waters, it may not perform as effectively in warm tropical waters. In comparison, the corrosion resistance of 431 Round Bar Material is on par with or slightly inferior to that of 304 Grade Material. Optimal performance is achieved with a smooth surface in its hardened and tempered state.
This material resists scaling when exposed to intermittent service up to 925°C and continuous service up to 870°C. However, it is generally not recommended for use at temperatures exceeding the tempering threshold, due to potential reductions in mechanical properties.
Full annealing is impractical for this grade as it hardens even with slow cooling. For process annealing, heat to 620-660°C and air cool.
This material can be hardened by heating to 980-1065°C, holding for approximately 30 minutes, and then quenching in air or oil. For complex parts or those already hardened, pre-heating at 760-790°C may be beneficial. Temper the material to meet specific mechanical requirements, following the temperature guidelines provided in the accompanying table.
Avoid the tempering range of 425-600°C due to diminished impact toughness, though this effect is less pronounced than in most other martensitic grades.
Welding presents challenges due to the risk of cracking. A pre-heat temperature of 200-300°C is recommended before welding. While Grade 410 filler rod can be used, Grades 308L, 309, or 310 will produce more ductile welds, provided matching properties are not required. Post-weld heat treatment at 650°C is advisable.
In its annealed state, this grade is relatively easy to machine. However, machining becomes more challenging if the material is hardened above 30HRC. The Ugima Improved Machinability version of Grade 431 significantly enhances achievable machining speeds and tool life.
Common applications include nuts and bolts, propeller shafting, pump shafts, beater bars, and marine hardware.
The bar product properties are specified under ASTM A276. While similar, these properties may not be identical to those specified for other products like plates and forgings, which are outlined in their respective standards.
