Type 321 stainless steel is a high-performance austenitic steel. It shares numerous properties with Type 304, enhanced with increased titanium and carbon content. This composition grants metal fabricators superior corrosion and oxidation resistance, paired with exceptional toughness even at cryogenic temperatures. Its remarkable resistance to oxidation and corrosion is attributed to the presence of titanium, which offers several benefits: it prevents harmful carbide precipitation in the heat-affected zone (HAZ) of the weld, provides partial protection against intergranular corrosion, and reduces embrittlement in high-risk weld areas. Type 321H stainless steel is ideal for applications involving carbide precipitation temperatures (800°F-1500°F) and exposure to corrosive environments. While similar to 304 stainless steel, 321 contains more nickel and is stabilized with titanium, which preferentially binds with carbon, preventing chromium carbide formation at grain boundaries. This process maintains corrosion resistance by minimizing chromium depletion at critical temperatures, ensuring outstanding performance. This grade hardens well with cold working, is easily weldable, and rarely requires post-weld annealing to maintain its exceptional performance across various corrosive conditions.
