HIGH TEMPERATURE RESISTANCE According to the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, the upper temperature limit is 600°F (315°C). Prolonged exposure to higher temperatures results in embrittlement.
MECHANICAL PROPERTIES Alloy 2205 delivers more than double the strength of conventional austenitic stainless steels in the annealed condition. It is also available in the cold-worked condition, with yield strength exceeding 160 ksi. It retains good toughness at temperatures down to -50°F (-10°C).
EXCEPTIONAL WORKABILITY Alloy 2205 can be effortlessly cold-formed. Due to its high work-hardening rate, intermediate anneals might be required. Post hot or cold forming, annealing is recommended to achieve optimal stress corrosion resistance.

CORROSION RESISTANCE
- Duplex 2205, with its high chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content, excels in corrosion resistance, surpassing 316 and 316L in most environments.
- The alloy's unique composition also provides exceptional resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, even in oxidizing and acidic environments.
- It is also resistant to chloride stress corrosion cracking and can withstand temperatures up to approximately 302°F (150°C).
- The presence of ferrite enhances its performance in caustic environments.
HEAT RESISTANCE
- Like other duplex stainless steels, Duplex 2205 offers excellent oxidation resistance at high temperatures.
- However, it is prone to embrittlement at temperatures above 572°F (300°C), limiting its use in such conditions.
WELDING CHARACTERISTICS
- Duplex 2205 demonstrates good weldability.
- However, it should not generally be welded without filler metal, as this can lead to excessive ferrite formation.
HEAT TREATMENT
- The recommended annealing temperature range is between 1868 to 2012°F (1020 to 1100°C).
- While it cannot be hardened by heat treatment, Duplex 2205 does exhibit work-hardening properties.
- Special considerations should be taken to account for its higher coefficient of thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING
Most manufacturers recommend a maximum hot forming temperature between 2010 and 2100°F (1100 and 1150°C). Be cautious if the workpiece edges are cooler than the bulk, as this can lead to cracking.
PROCESSING - COLD FORMING
Duplex 2205 Stainless Steel Tube showcases exceptional formability across various manufacturing processes. However, its high strength can pose challenges. Even with powerful equipment, the springback effect due to the grade's high strength must be meticulously managed.
MACHINABILITY
Duplex 2205 proves slightly more challenging to machine compared to the 300 series austenitic stainless steels. Increased cutting forces are necessary, leading to quicker tool wear. Follow these machining guidelines for optimal results: A) Utilize a robust, rigid machine with strong tool and workpiece mounts; B) Minimize tool extensions to reduce vibration; C) Ensure the tool nose radius is only as long as needed for a sharp yet strong carbide edge; D) Plan the machining sequence to consistently cut below the work-hardened layer from prior operations.
