CORROSION RESISTANCE Alloy 2205 boasts excellent resistance to chloride-induced pitting and stress corrosion cracking.
HIGH TEMPERATURE RESISTANCE According to the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, the upper temperature limit is 600°F (315°C). Prolonged exposure to higher temperatures results in embrittlement.
MECHANICAL PROPERTIES Alloy 2205 delivers more than double the strength of conventional austenitic stainless steels in the annealed condition. It is also available in the cold-worked condition, with yield strength exceeding 160 ksi. It retains good toughness at temperatures down to -50°F (-10°C).
EXCEPTIONAL WORKABILITY Alloy 2205 can be effortlessly cold-formed. Due to its high work-hardening rate, intermediate anneals might be required. Post hot or cold forming, annealing is recommended to achieve optimal stress corrosion resistance.

Duplex 2205 stainless steel pipe is a high-performance duplex ferritic-austenitic stainless steel, uniquely formulated with 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel. Recognized as the most commonly used duplex stainless steel grade, it boasts a yield strength that is twice that of conventional austenitic grades. Its superior properties include exceptional fatigue strength and outstanding resistance to stress corrosion cracking, crevice, pitting, and general corrosion, even in the most severe conditions.
Most manufacturers recommend a maximum hot forming temperature between 2010 and 2100°F (1100 and 1150°C). Be cautious if the workpiece edges are cooler than the bulk, as this can lead to cracking.
Duplex 2205 Stainless Steel Tube showcases exceptional formability across various manufacturing processes. However, its high strength can pose challenges. Even with powerful equipment, the springback effect due to the grade's high strength must be meticulously managed.
Duplex 2205 proves slightly more challenging to machine compared to the 300 series austenitic stainless steels. Increased cutting forces are necessary, leading to quicker tool wear. Follow these machining guidelines for optimal results: A) Utilize a robust, rigid machine with strong tool and workpiece mounts; B) Minimize tool extensions to reduce vibration; C) Ensure the tool nose radius is only as long as needed for a sharp yet strong carbide edge; D) Plan the machining sequence to consistently cut below the work-hardened layer from prior operations.
