Leading Stainless Steel Sheet Suppliers in China

Grade 904L:

• Austenitic stainless steel sheet grade 904L is a non-stabilized, high alloy, low carbon steel. Thanks to the addition of copper, this grade has enhanced resistance to strong reducing acids, particularly sulfuric acid. It also offers robust protection against chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking and pitting/crevice corrosion.
• This grade boasts exceptional formability and weldability and remains non-magnetic in all conditions. Due to its austenitic structure, it also delivers outstanding toughness, even at cryogenic temperatures.
• 904L stainless steel is enriched with significant amounts of nickel and molybdenum, both of which are highly valuable elements. While Duplex stainless steel 2205 (S31803 or S32205) can now fulfill many of the roles traditionally played by 904L at a lower cost, making 904L less commonly used today, it remains a premium choice for specific applications.

Unmatched Corrosion Resistance:

• Originally designed to withstand sulfuric acid, 904L stainless steel boasts exceptional durability under a wide array of conditions. It performs well in warm seawater and other high-chloride environments, as evidenced by a PRE (Pitting Resistance Equivalent) score of 35. Its high nickel content provides superior resistance to stress corrosion cracking compared to standard austenitic grades. Copper enhances its resilience in sulfuric and other reducing acids, particularly in the highly aggressive 'mid-concentration' range.
• 904L stainless steel's corrosion performance sits between the standard austenitic grade 316L and the more heavily alloyed 'super austenitic' grades containing 6% molybdenum and equivalent elements.
• Without the presence of molybdenum, grades like 304L and 310L fall short in comparison to the robust resistance offered by 904L.
• For optimal resistance to stress corrosion cracking in harsh conditions, 904L should undergo solution treatment following any cold work.

Superior Heat Resistance:

• 904L stainless steel offers strong oxidation resistance. However, like other highly alloyed grades, it can suffer from structural instability at elevated temperatures due to the precipitation of brittle phases like sigma. It is not recommended for use above 550°C. According to the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, design stress values for 904L are set at 371°C.

Precision Heat Treatment:

• Solution Treatment (Annealing) involves heating 904L to 1090-1175°C followed by rapid cooling. This grade cannot be hardened through thermal treatment.

Versatile Welding Capabilities:

• 904L stainless steel can be welded successfully using all standard techniques. However, due to its fully austenitic solidification, it is susceptible to heat cracking, particularly in constrained weldments. It is advisable to avoid pre-heating, and post-weld heat treatment is typically unnecessary. AS 1554.6 prequalifies 904L rods and electrodes for welding.

Fabrication Excellence:

• As a high purity, low sulfur grade, 904L may not machine as easily as other grades designed with enhanced machinability. Nonetheless, conventional machining methods can be used effectively. Achieving a small bending radius is straightforward, usually performed cold. While subsequent annealing is generally not necessary, it should be considered if the component will face severe stress corrosion cracking conditions.

Diverse Applications:

• 904L stainless steel is ideally suited for a variety of demanding applications, including processing plants for sulfuric, phosphoric, and acetic acids; pulp and paper processing; gas scrubbing plant components; seawater cooling equipment; oil refinery components; and wires in electrostatic precipitators.

Specified Properties:

• In alignment with ASTM A240M standards, 904L stainless steel meets specific requirements for flat rolled products such as plates, sheets, and coils. Similar properties apply to other forms like pipe, tube, and bar, though specifications may vary slightly.

904L Stainless Steel Sheets in Various Finishes:

Our range of 904L stainless steel sheets is available in an array of exquisite finishes, including brushed, 2B smooth, and the highly reflective 8K mirror finish.

Each stainless steel sheet is delivered with a protective film on the finished side to prevent wear and markings during fabrication or installation. This film is easily removed, leaving the back side unfinished.
