431 Stainless Steel Bar Material boasts outstanding corrosion resistance across a diverse array of corrosive environments. While it shows some resilience to saltwater in cooler southern waters, it may not perform as well in the warm, tropical seas. Comparatively, the corrosion resistance of 431 Round Bar Material is on par with or slightly below that of 304 Grade Material. Optimal performance is achieved when the material has a smooth surface and is in the hardened and tempered state.
This grade resists scaling in intermittent service up to 925°C and in continuous service up to 870°C. However, it is generally not recommended for use above the relevant tempering temperature due to a decline in mechanical properties.
Full anneal is impractical for this grade as it hardens even with slow cooling. Process Anneal involves heating to 620-660°C followed by air cooling.
Hardening is achieved by heating to 980-1065°C, holding for approximately half an hour, then quenching in air or oil. Pre-heating at 760-790°C is advisable for complex parts or those already hardened. Tempering should suit mechanical requirements, as specified in the accompanying table.
The tempering range of 425-600°C is to be avoided due to reduced impact toughness, though the effect is less pronounced than in most other martensitic grades.
Welding this grade is challenging due to the risk of cracking. Pre-heating at 200-300°C is recommended. Grade 410 filler rod can be used, but Grades 308L, 309, or 310 are preferred for more ductile welds if matching properties aren't required. Post-weld heat treatment at 650°C is advised.
In its annealed state, this grade is relatively easy to machine. However, machining becomes more difficult when hardened above 30HRC. Ugima's Improved Machinability version of Grade 431 significantly enhances machining speeds and tool life.
Common applications include nuts and bolts, propeller shafting, pump shafts, beater bars, and marine hardware.
The specified properties apply to bar products under ASTM A276. Similar but not necessarily identical properties are stipulated for other products like plates and forgings in their respective specifications.
Stainless steel round bars serve various purposes, from construction to automotive parts. Due to their versatile usage, Daxun Alloys provides these bars in multiple grades and sizes. Our advanced and complimentary cutting service ensures precise adherence to your specifications every time.
