Duplex 2205 Round Bar is a superior duplex ferritic-austenitic stainless steel bar, boasting an impressive composition of 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel. Celebrated as the most widely utilized duplex stainless steel grade, it offers twice the yield strength of conventional austenitic grades. Additionally, it excels in fatigue strength and provides unmatched resistance to stress corrosion cracking, crevice, pitting, erosion, and general corrosion even under the most severe conditions.
Most producers of Duplex 2205 advise a maximum hot forming temperature between 2010 and 2100°F (1100 to 1150°C). If the workpiece shape lacks compactness, edges can be significantly cooler than the bulk, posing a risk of cracking in these cooler areas.
Duplex 2205 showcases exceptional formability across various fabrications. However, its high strength can present challenges. Despite adequate equipment power, adjustments must be made for increased spring-back due to the grade's superior strength.
Machining Duplex stainless steel bar 2205 is somewhat more challenging than working with 300 series austenitic stainless steel. Increased cutting forces lead to quicker tool wear. To optimize machining: A) Utilize a robust, rigid machine with a strong tool and secure workpiece mount; B) Maintain short tool extensions to minimize vibration; C) Avoid excessive tool nose radius to keep the carbide sharp while ensuring sufficient strength; D) Plan the machining sequence so the depth of cut stays below the previously work-hardened layer.
