GENERAL PROPERTIES
- Grade 430 is a ferritic, straight chromium, non-hardenable stainless steel that perfectly balances excellent corrosion resistance with outstanding formability and usable mechanical properties. Due to its resilient nature, it finds extensive use in various chemical applications, with automotive trim and appliance components being the most prevalent.
- Grade 430F is the free-machining variant of this grade, available in bar form for use in automatic screw machines. Grade 434 serves as the molybdenum-enhanced equivalent of Grade 430, offering a similar advantageous set of characteristics. The incorporation of molybdenum significantly enhances its corrosion resistance.
- ASTM A240/A240M outlines the characteristics of Grade 430 for flat rolled products such as plates, sheets, and coils. Other forms like forgings and bars share similar but distinct properties as specified. The properties of Grade 430F are specified for bars in ASTM A582.

CORROSION RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 offers robust resistance to a variety of corrosive environments, including several organic acids. When polished or ground to a high standard, its corrosion resistance is maximized, rivaling that of Grade 304. Like all ferritic grades, Grade 430 has exceptional resistance to stress corrosion cracking.
- The non-free machining Grade 430F has considerably lower resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, similar to other high sulfur free machining grades.
HEAT RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 withstands oxidation up to 870°C in intermittent service and up to 815°C in continuous service. However, prolonged heating in the 400-600°C range may cause brittleness at room temperature, which can be remedied through annealing.
HEAT TREATMENT:
- Solution Annealing - Heat to 815-845°C, hold for ½ hour per 25mm of thickness, cool slowly in the furnace to 600°C, then quickly air cool. Slow cooling from 540-400°C will result in embrittlement.
- Sub-Critical Anneal - Heat to 760-815°C, followed by air cooling or water quenching.
- This grade is not hardenable through thermal treatment.
WELDING:
- Pre-heat at 150-200°C if welding is required.
- To mitigate embrittlement in the weld metal and heat-affected zone, a post-weld anneal at 790-815°C is recommended.
- Please note that grain refinement will not occur.
MACHINING:
- This alloy is easier to machine compared to standard austenitic grades such as 304.
- Nevertheless, there is still a tendency for galling and material pick-up on the cutting tool.
- Bars that have been lightly drawn are notably easier to machine than those in the annealed condition.
- Grade 430F, the free-machining version of 430, is significantly easier to machine.
FABRICATION:
- Its lower work-hardening rate makes bending and forming somewhat easier compared to grade 304.
- However, its lower ductility restricts very severe operations.
- For severe bends, it is recommended to make the bend axis at right angles to the rolling direction.
- Severe cold heading of 430 wire is feasible.
