430 (1.4016) Stainless Steel Sheet is a ferritic stainless steel, distinguished by its elevated chromium content ranging from 12% to 180%. This composition bestows the steel with superior ductility, formability, and corrosion resistance against strong acids. The high chromium content also enhances oxidation resistance. For optimal corrosion resistance, the stainless steel should be polished or ground. Post-heating, the metal is annealed to alleviate brittleness at room temperature. General Properties:
- Ferritic, pure chromium, non-hardenable grade 430 stainless steel boasts excellent formability and corrosion resistance, along with practical mechanical qualities. Its resistance to *** corrosion makes it valuable for certain chemical applications; however, its primary uses are in appliance parts and automotive trim.
- Grade 430F, a more machinable variant of this grade, is available in bar form and is ideal for use in automatic screw machines. Additionally, Grade 434 shares the beneficial characteristics of Grade 430 but with added molybdenum to enhance corrosion resistance.
- ASTM A240/A240M defines the 430 qualities for flat-rolled products like plates, sheets, and coils. Similar, but not always identical, attributes can be found in specifications for other forms such as bars and forgings. For bars, the Grade 430F attributes are outlined under ASTM A582.

CORROSION RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 material offers excellent resistance to a broad array of corrosive environments, including nitric and some organic acids. Optimal corrosion resistance is achieved when highly polished or ground. Its resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion is on par with grade 304. Similar to all ferritic grades, 430 shows exceptional resistance to stress corrosion cracking.
- The non-free machining grade, 430F, has substantially lower resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, similar to other high sulfur free machining grades.
HEAT RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 resists oxidation up to 870°C in intermittent service and 815°C in continuous service. Extended heating between 400-600°C can lead to brittleness at room temperature, which can be remedied through annealing.
HEAT TREATMENT:
- Solution Annealing - Heat to 815-845°C, maintain for ½ hour per 25mm of thickness, follow with slow furnace cooling to 600°C, then rapid air cooling. Slow cooling from 540-400°C will cause embrittlement.
- Sub-Critical Anneal - Heat to 760-815°C, then air cool or water quench.
- This grade is not hardenable by thermal treatment.
WELDING:
- If welding is necessary, pre-heat to 150-200°C.
- Post-weld annealing at 790-815°C can relieve embrittlement in the weld metal and heat-affected zone.
- Grain refinement will not occur.
MACHINING:
- Easier to machine than standard austenitic grades like 304.
- Still, there is a tendency for galling and pick-up on the cutting tool.
- Bars that are lightly drawn are easier to machine than those in the annealed condition.
- Grade 430F, the free machining variant of 430, is considerably easier to machine.
FABRICATION:
- The lower work hardening rate makes bending and forming somewhat easier compared to grade 304.
- Lower ductility limits very severe operations.
- Severe bends should be made with the bend axis perpendicular to the rolling direction.
- Severe cold heading of 430 wire is feasible.
