SPECIFICATIONS
AMS 4928 - Bars, Forgings, and Forging Stock (Annealed)
AMS 4965 - Bars, Forgings (Solution treated and aged)
AMS 4967 - Bars, Forgings (Annealed, Heat Treatable)
HEAT TREATMENT
- For applications requiring high hardness, tensile strength, and fatigue resistance, annealing can be conducted at temperatures ranging from 1,700-1,900°F (927 - 1,038°C).
DAXUN 6-4™ Grade 5 alloy supports diverse heat treatment methods. - 1. Anneal: 1,275 -1,400°F; (691 - 760°C), duration of ½ to 2 hours, followed by air or furnace cooling.
- 2. Stress Relief Anneal: 1,000 -1,200°F; (538 - 649°C), duration of 1 to 8 hours, followed by air or furnace cooling.
- 3. Solution Heat Treat: 1,675 -1,750°F; (913 - 954°C), duration of 1 hour, followed by water quenching.
- 4. Aging: 975 -1,025°F; (524 - 552°C), duration of 4 to 8 hours, followed by air cooling.
In the solution treated and aged condition, rapid quenching of smaller sections delivers optimum properties. Larger sections and/or delayed quenching might result in suboptimal properties.
HARDNESS
Typical hardness ranges from Rockwell C 30-34 in the annealed condition to approximately Rockwell C 35-39 in the solution treated and aged condition.
Forgeability/Formability
- Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar is forgeable at 1,750°F (954°C) with a final forging temperature of 1,450°F (788°C). A minimum reduction of 35% is recommended to achieve optimal properties.
- The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar is notoriously difficult to form at room temperature, even when annealed. For severe forming operations such as bending or stretching, annealed material can be shaped at elevated temperatures up to 1,200°F (649°C) without compromising its mechanical integrity. Hot sizing or forming is effectively achieved through creep forming within the 1,000 - 1,200°F (538 - 649°C) range.
Machinability
The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar can be machined using techniques suited for austenitic stainless steel, which include slow machining speeds, high feed rates, rigid tooling, and ample use of non-chlorinated cutting fluids.
Weldability
Welding the Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy rod is straightforward in both the annealed and solution-aged conditions, with the full aging process occurring during post-weld heat treatment. To avoid contamination from oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen, welding should be done in an inert gas environment. Fusion welding can be accomplished in a gas-filled chamber with auxiliary inert gas shielding the molten metal and adjacent heated zones. Spot, seam, and flash welding can be performed without a protective atmosphere.
Special Considerations
The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 titanium alloy rod can become contaminated with hydrogen from improper pickling, and with oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon during forging, heat treating, and brazing. Such contamination may lead to a reduction in ductility, negatively affecting notch sensitivity and forming characteristics.

Grade 2 Titanium Rod
Corrosion Resistance
Titanium should not be exposed to strong reducing acids, fluoride solutions, pure oxygen, or anhydrous ***.
General Corrosion
Table 1 displays the general corrosion rates for Grade 2 titanium across various media. Commercially Pure (CP) titanium offers impressive corrosion resistance in diverse environments such as:
- Seawater and Brines
- Inorganic Salts
- Moist *** Gas
- Alkaline Solutions
- Oxidizing Acids
- Organics and Organic Acids
- Sulfur Compounds
Crevice Corrosion
CP titanium demonstrates superior resistance to crevice corrosion in salt solutions compared to stainless steels. It remains unaffected by crevice corrosion at temperatures below 80°C (176°F) regardless of pH, even under super-chlorinated conditions.
Stress Corrosion Cracking
Grade 2 titanium exhibits exceptional resistance to stress corrosion cracking in hot chloride solutions and is immune in seawater.
Erosion Corrosion
Titanium offers remarkable resistance to erosion in flowing environments.
Jiangsu Daxun Alloy Co., Ltd. offers titanium rods capable of withstanding seawater velocities up to 130 ft/sec (40 m/sec) with minimal impact on the material's integrity. Even the presence of abrasive particles like sand exerts only a negligible effect on corrosion.
Hydrogen Embrittlement
Exposing titanium to seawater does not result in significant hydrogen absorption, even at elevated temperatures. Hydrogen absorption in titanium typically requires the following stringent conditions:
- pH levels are below 3 or above 12
- Temperatures exceed 176°F (80°C)
- Presence of a mechanism for hydrogen generation, such as a galvanic couple or impressed current.
Bio-Corrosion
Titanium alloys exhibit exceptional immunity to microbiologically influenced corrosion. While biofouling by marine organisms can occur due to the non-toxicity of titanium, it can be mitigated through chlorination or increased water velocity in heat exchangers.
Corrosion Fatigue
Unlike many materials, titanium does not experience a decline in fatigue performance when immersed in seawater. Its fatigue endurance limits and *** growth rates remain consistent whether tested in air or seawater environments.
Galvanic Corrosion
In the galvanic series, titanium is positioned near the noble end, adjacent to stainless steels, typically acting as the cathode when coupled with other metals. Titanium itself remains unaffected by galvanic corrosion but can accelerate the corrosion of the other metal. Coupling with more noble metals like graphite further enhances titanium's passivity.
Fatigue Properties
Grade 2 Titanium Rods from Jiangsu Daxun Alloy Co., Ltd. maintain their fatigue properties even in corrosive seawater. Their fatigue endurance limits and *** growth rates are unaffected by the environment.
Weldability
CP2 Grade Titanium Rods are highly weldable with proper precautions. An inert gas shield must protect both the inner and outer surfaces due to titanium's reactivity, and the material should be free from grease or oil.
Typically, Grade 2 Titanium Rods are welded using manual or automatic TIG welding, with or without filler wire. Low heat input is recommended to minimize the heat-affected zone. Post-weld heat treatment is generally unnecessary.
