The Global Leader in Commercially Pure Titanium Rod Manufacturing Services

Grade 2 Titanium Rod is the workhorse among titanium alloy rods, renowned for its exceptional strength-to-density ratio, making it ideal for weight-sensitive applications. As a commercially pure (CP) titanium alloy, it offers the optimum balance of strength and weight. With outstanding strength and ductility, this alloy is easily welded and highly resistant to impact. Its superior corrosion resistance in oxidizing conditions, alkaline media, brine solutions, weakly reducing environments, and wet *** makes it exceptionally durable. Additionally, it withstands seawater and saline solutions with ease. Grade 2 Titanium Rod's low density, impressive strength-to-weight ratio, and exceptional corrosion resistance make it a prime choice for diverse applications.

DETAILED SPECIFICATIONS

AMS 4928 - Bars, Forgings, and Forging Stock (Annealed)

AMS 4965 - Bars, Forgings (Solution Treated and Aged)

AMS 4967 - Bars, Forgings (Annealed, Heat Treatable)

ADVANCED HEAT TREATMENT

  • For applications requiring high hardness, tensile strength, and fatigue strength, annealing can be performed at 1,700-1,900°F (927-1,038°C).
DAXUN 6-4™ Grade 5 alloy offers versatile heat treatment options.
  • 1. Anneal: 1,275-1,400°F (691-760°C), ½ to 2 hours, air or furnace cool
  • 2. Stress Relief Anneal: 1,000-1,200°F (538-649°C), 1 to 8 hours, air or furnace cool
  • 3. Solution Heat Treat: 1,675-1,750°F (913-954°C), 1 hour, water quench
  • 4. Aging: 975-1,025°F (524-552°C), 4 to 8 hours, air cool

In the solution treated and aged condition, rapid quenching of small sections yields optimum properties. Larger sections or delayed quenching may result in suboptimal properties.

HARDNESS SPECIFICATIONS

Typical hardness in the annealed condition is Rockwell C 30-34, and Rockwell C 35-39 in the solution and aged condition.

EXCELLENT FORGEABILITY/FORMABILITY

  • Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar is optimally forged at 1,750°F (954°C), with a final forging temperature of 1,450°F (788°C). A minimum of 35% reduction is recommended to achieve superior properties.
  • Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar presents challenges for forming at room temperature, even post-annealing. For demanding operations like bending or stretching, it can be effectively formed at temperatures up to 1,200°F (649°C) while maintaining its mechanical integrity. Hot sizing or forming is optimally executed through creep forming within the temperature range of 1,000 - 1,200°F (538 - 649°C).

Machinability

The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar can be expertly machined using methods akin to those for austenitic stainless steel. This entails slow machining speeds, high feed rates, and the use of rigid tools combined with copious amounts of non-chlorinated cutting fluids to ensure precision and quality.

Weldability

The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy rod demonstrates excellent weldability, whether in the annealed state or in a solution and partially aged condition, with aging achieved through post-weld heat treatment. Careful measures must be taken to prevent contamination with oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen. Fusion welding should occur in an inert gas-filled chamber or with inert gas coverage to protect the molten metal and adjacent heated zones. Spot, seam, and flash welding can be conducted without a protective atmosphere.

Special Considerations

Contamination of the Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 titanium alloy rod with hydrogen (from improper pickling), or oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon (during forging, heat treating, or brazing) can compromise ductility. This contamination heightens notch sensitivity and adversely affects forming characteristics.

Erosion Corrosion

Titanium exhibits outstanding resistance to erosion in flowing environments.
Seawater with velocities reaching up to 130 ft/sec (40 m/sec) shows negligible impact on this material. Even the presence of abrasive particles such as sand induces only minor effects on corrosion.

Hydrogen Embrittlement

Titanium exposed to seawater, even at elevated temperatures, absorbs an insignificant amount of hydrogen. Notably, hydrogen absorption typically occurs only when all three of the following conditions are satisfied:

  1. The pH levels are < 3 or > 12
  2. Temperatures exceed 176°F (80°C)
  3. A mechanism is present for hydrogen generation, such as a galvanic couple or an impressed current.

Bio-Corrosion

Titanium alloys exhibit exceptional immunity to various types of microbiologically influenced corrosion. Although these alloys are non-toxic to marine organisms, resulting in potential biofouling in seawater, this can be effectively minimized through chlorination or by increasing water velocity via the heat exchanger.

Corrosion Fatigue

Unlike many other materials, titanium maintains its fatigue performance in seawater. Both fatigue endurance limits and fatigue *** growth rates remain consistent, whether tested in air or seawater.

Galvanic Corrosion

In the galvanic series, titanium is positioned towards the noble end near stainless steels and typically functions as the cathode when paired with other metals. Consequently, titanium is not susceptible to galvanic corrosion but can accelerate the corrosion of the other metal. Coupling titanium with more noble metals, such as graphite, further enhances titanium's passivity.

Fatigue Properties

Grade 2 Titanium Rod, unlike many other materials, does not experience a decrease in fatigue properties when exposed to seawater. Fatigue endurance limits and fatigue *** growth rates remain unchanged, whether tested in air or seawater.

Weldability

CP2 Grade Titanium Rod is highly weldable, provided the necessary precautions are observed. Due to titanium's reactivity, an inert gas shield must cover both the OD and ID of the rod. The material must also be free from any grease or oil contamination.

Grade 2 Titanium Rod is typically welded using manual or automatic TIG welding, with or without filler wire. To minimize the heat-affected zone, low heat input should be utilized. Post-weld heat treatment is generally unnecessary for Titanium Rod.
