Type 409 Stainless Steel (UNS S40900) is a stabilized ferritic stainless steel that boasts superior oxidation and corrosion resistance compared to carbon steel. Unless specified otherwise by the purchaser, any of these compositions can be delivered as UNS S40900. Grade 409
- Grade 409 is a titanium-stabilized, ferritic stainless steel known for its exceptional performance. It is a general-purpose chromium stainless steel, widely utilized in automotive exhaust systems. The material is ideal for applications where mechanical qualities, corrosion resistance, and weldability are more important than appearance, especially in high-temperature environments.
- ASTM standards, such as ASTM A240M for flat rolled steel, now recognize S40910, S40920, and S40930 as specific sub-grades, replacing the generic Grade 409.
- These sub-grades are stabilized to varying degrees with titanium, niobium, or their combinations. Any of these can be certified as S40900 (Grade 409). The ASTM A268M standard only includes the basic Grade 409 for tubing applications.
Corrosion Resistance:
- Grade 409 offers resistance to both atmospheric and exhaust gas corrosion. A light surface rust usually forms, which acts as a protective layer preventing further corrosion, though it is not suitable for cosmetic purposes. Its corrosion resistance is comparable to that of 3CR12 and 12% chromium martensitic grades (e.g., Grade 410) but is lower than the 17% chromium Grade 430.
Heat Resistance
- Grade 409 withstands scaling in intermittent service up to 815°C and in continuous service up to 675°C, although these temperatures can vary depending on the specific service environment.
Heat Treatment
- For annealing, heat Grade 409 to temperatures between 790-900°C, then cool with air. This grade cannot be hardened through heat treatment.
Welding
- Grade 409 is easy to weld, though a preheat of 150-260°C is recommended. While using Grade 409 or Grade 430 electrodes or filler rods is acceptable, welding with Grade 309 rods or electrodes is pre-qualified per AS 1554.6. These austenitic fillers result in a more ductile weld.
- Post-weld annealing at temperatures between 760-815°C enhances weld ductility.
Welding small sections generally does not require post-weld annealing. Automotive exhaust tubing is typically welded autogenously, without filler metal.
To minimize the effects of grain formation, all welding should be performed with minimal heat input.

- ASTM A268M outlines the specifications for Grade 409 in annealed tubing. ASTM A240M details the composition of additional grades for coil and sheet applications. Specifications for other items may include similar, though not identical, properties.
FORMING:
- Grade 409 stainless steel can be cut, blanked, stretch-formed, and drawn with ease. Its formability is very similar to that of carbon steel.
