GENERAL PROPERTIES
- Grade 430 is a ferritic, straight chromium, non-hardenable stainless steel that masterfully balances excellent corrosion resistance and formability with robust mechanical properties. Its impressive resistance makes it suitable for a wide array of chemical applications, although it is predominantly utilized in automobile trim and appliance components.
- Grade 430F is the free-machining variant of this grade, specifically crafted for use in automatic screw machines and available in bar form. Grade 434, enriched with molybdenum, is the enhanced counterpart of Grade 430, offering the same features with superior corrosion resistance.
- ASTM A240/A240M outlines the specifications for Grade 430 in flat rolled products, including plate, sheet, and coil. Other product forms like forgings and bars have similar but not identical specifications as per their respective standards. Grade 430F's properties for bar are detailed in ASTM A582.

CORROSION RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 offers commendable resistance to a broad spectrum of corrosive environments, including some organic acids. Optimal corrosion resistance is attained when the surface is highly polished or ground. Its resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion is on par with Grade 304. As with other ferritic grades, 430 also demonstrates exceptional resistance to stress corrosion cracking.
- The non-free machining grade, 430F, shows significantly reduced resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, similar to other high sulfur free-machining grades.
HEAT RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 withstands oxidation up to 870°C in intermittent service and 815°C in continuous service. However, it may become brittle at room temperature after prolonged heating in the 400-600°C range, an effect that can be mitigated through annealing.
HEAT TREATMENT:
- Solution Annealing - Heat to 815-845°C, maintain for ½ hour per 25mm of thickness, then slow furnace cool to 600°C and quickly air cool. Slow cooling from 540-400°C will induce embrittlement.
- Sub-Critical Anneal - Heat to 760-815°C followed by air cooling or water quenching.
- This grade is not hardenable by thermal treatment.
WELDING:
- Pre-heat at 150-200°C if welding is necessary.
- To alleviate embrittlement in the weld metal and heat-affected zone, performing a post-weld anneal at 790-815°C is recommended, ensuring enhanced durability and performance.
- Grain refinement is not achievable with this process.
MACHINING:
- This material offers easier machinability compared to standard austenitic grades like 304, providing greater efficiency in processing.
- However, there is still a tendency for galling and material pick-up on the cutting tool, necessitating careful handling.
- Bars that have been lightly drawn are significantly easier to machine than their annealed counterparts, offering improved workability.
- Grade 430F, designed for free machining, is substantially easier to machine, enhancing production efficiency.
FABRICATION:
- The lower work hardening rate of this grade makes bending and forming processes somewhat easier compared to grade 304.
- However, lower ductility can limit the feasibility of very severe operations, requiring careful planning.
- For severe bends, it is recommended to align the bend axis at right angles to the rolling direction to prevent material failure.
- Severe cold heading of 430 wire is feasible, allowing for versatility in fabrication processes.
