904 alloy (N08904) stainless steel is a high-alloy austenitic marvel designed to endure severe corrosion. It boasts exceptional corrosion resistance.
904L stainless steel is a non-stabilized austenitic stainless steel with a minimal carbon content. This high alloy steel includes copper, enhancing its resistance to potent reducing acids such as sulfuric acid. Additionally, it is resistant to stress corrosion, cracking, and crevice corrosion. 904L stainless steel is non-magnetic and exhibits extraordinary formability, robustness, and welding capacities. The 904L grade is rich in premium elements like molybdenum and nickel.
904L grade stainless steel demonstrates remarkable resistance to hot seawater and chloride assaults. Due to its high nickel content, 904L grade stainless steel excels in resisting stress corrosion cracking. The inclusion of copper further boosts resilience against sulfuric acid and other reducing agents. In terms of corrosion resistance, 904L falls between super austenitic steels with 6% molybdenum and standard 316L austenitic steel. Compared to grades 304L and 310L, which lack molybdenum, 904L is more susceptible. Grade 904L stainless steel tubes exhibit unparalleled resistance to warm seawater and chloride-induced corrosion. This exceptional durability results from the high nickel content within its composition, which also fortifies the steel against stress corrosion cracking. The integration of copper further enhances its resistance to sulfuric acid and other reducing agents, ensuring reliability in both severe and moderate environments.
The corrosion resistance of grade 904L stainless steel is superior to standard 316L austenitic grades and stands between super austenitic grades with 6% molybdenum. However, it offers less resistance than grades 304L and 310L, which are molybdenum-free. For optimal stress corrosion cracking resistance in critical conditions, grade 904L must undergo solution treatment after cold working.
Grade 904L stainless steels deliver commendable oxidation resistance. Nevertheless, their structural integrity diminishes at elevated temperatures, particularly beyond 400°C, limiting their high-temperature applications.
Grade 904L stainless steels are amenable to solution heat-treatment at temperatures ranging from 1090°C to 1175°C, followed by rapid cooling. This thermal treatment is ideal for hardening these grades, thereby enhancing their mechanical properties and corrosion resistance.
Welding grade 904L stainless steels can be effectively executed using all conventional methods without necessitating pre-heat or post-weld heat treatments. Despite this, there's a risk of hot cracking in constrained weldments. Employing grade 904L electrodes and rods, as per AS 1554.6 standards, is recommended for achieving optimal welding outcomes.
Grade 904L stainless steel tubes are characterized by their high purity and low sulfur content, making them suitable for various machining methods. These grades can be easily bent to small radii under cold conditions. While annealing is not typically required post-fabrication, it should be considered when operating under extreme stress corrosion conditions.
