904 alloy (N08904) stainless steel is a high-alloy austenitic product designed to withstand severe corrosion, offering robust corrosion resistance.
904L stainless steel is a non-stabilized austenitic stainless steel with a low carbon level. This high alloy stainless steel contains copper, enhancing its resistance to strong reducing acids like sulfuric acid. The steel also resists stress corrosion, cracking, and crevice corrosion. 904L stainless steel is non-magnetic and boasts outstanding formability, toughness, and welding capabilities. The 904L grade features a high concentration of costly elements like molybdenum and nickel.
904L grade stainless steel exhibits excellent resistance to hot seawater and chloride attack. Due to its high nickel content, 904L grade stainless steel resists stress corrosion cracking exceptionally well. Additionally, the inclusion of copper in these stainless steels enhances their resistance to sulfuric acid and other reducing agents in both severe and mild environments. The corrosion resistance of 904L grade steel falls between super austenitic steels containing 6% molybdenum and standard 316L austenitic steel. Grade 904L is more susceptible to corrosion than grades 304L and 310L, which do not include Mo. To achieve the highest resistance to stress corrosion cracking in sensitive settings, this grade must undergo solution treatment following cold working.

Grade 904L stainless steels tubes boast exceptional resistance to warm seawater and chloride attacks. This superior resistance is attributed to the high nickel content in its composition. The inclusion of copper enhances its ability to withstand sulphuric acid and other reducing agents, making it suitable for both aggressive and mild conditions.
The corrosion resistance of grade 904L stands between super austenitic grades containing 6% molybdenum and standard 316L austenitic grades. While it offers intermediate resistance, it falls short compared to grades like 304L and 310L, which are molybdenum-free. Post-cold working, this steel grade necessitates solution treatment to maximize stress corrosion cracking resistance under critical environments.
Grade 904L stainless steels exhibit commendable oxidation resistance. However, their structural stability tends to deteriorate at elevated temperatures, particularly beyond 400°C.
Grade 904L stainless steels undergo solution heat treatment at temperatures ranging from 1090 to 1175°C, followed by rapid cooling. This thermal treatment is effective in hardening these grades.
Welding grade 904L stainless steels can be efficiently performed using all conventional techniques. There is no need for pre-heat and post-weld heat treatments. However, hot cracking may occur in constrained weldments. For welding, grade 904L electrodes and rods are recommended as per AS 1554.6 standards.
Grade 904L stainless steel tubes are characterized by their high purity and low sulfur content. They can be machined using standard methods and bent to small radii under cold conditions. While annealing is typically unnecessary, it should be conducted when fabrication involves severe stress corrosion conditions.
