DETAILED SPECIFICATIONS
AMS 4928 - Bars, Forgings, and Forging Stock (Annealed)
AMS 4965 - Bars, Forgings (Solution Treated and Aged)
AMS 4967 - Bars, Forgings (Annealed, Heat Treatable)
ADVANCED HEAT TREATMENT
- For elevated hardness, tensile strength, and fatigue strength, annealing can be conducted at 1,700-1,900°F (927 - 1,038°C).
Our DAXUN 6-4™ Grade 5 alloy offers versatile heat treatment options. - 1. Anneal: 1,275 - 1,400°F; (691 - 760°C), ½ to 2 hours, air or furnace cool
- 2. Stress Relief Anneal: 1,000 - 1,200°F; (538 - 649°C), 1 to 8 hours, air or furnace cool
- 3. Solution Heat Treat: 1,675 - 1,750°F; (913 - 954°C), 1 hour, water quench
- 4. Aging: 975 - 1,025°F; (524 - 552°C), 4 to 8 hours - air cool
In the solution-treated and aged condition, rapid quenching of smaller sections yields optimal properties, whereas larger sections and/or delayed cooling may result in suboptimal properties.
ENHANCED HARDNESS
Typical hardness in the annealed state ranges from Rockwell C 30-34, escalating to Rockwell C 35-39 when solution treated and aged.
Forgeability/Formability
- The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar is expertly forged at a precise 1,750°F (954°C), concluding with a final forging temperature of 1,450°F (788°C). For achieving optimal properties, a minimum reduction of 35% is highly recommended.
- Crafted for excellence, the Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar presents challenges in forming at room temperature, even when annealed. However, severe forming operations like bending or stretching can be successfully executed on annealed material at temperatures reaching up to 1,200°F (649°C) without compromising mechanical properties. Hot sizing or forming is efficiently conducted via creep forming within the range of 1,000 - 1,200°F (538 - 649°C).
Machinability
The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar is machinable using techniques similar to those for austenitic stainless steel. Employing slow machining speeds, high feeds, rigid tools, and substantial quantities of non-chlorinated cutting fluids ensures effective machining.
Weldability
The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy rod is highly weldable in its annealed condition or when solution and partially aged, with aging completed through post weld heat treatment. Care must be taken to prevent contamination by oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen. Fusion welding should be performed in an inert gas-filled chamber or with inert gas to protect the molten metal and adjacent heated zones, using a tail shield. Additionally, spot, seam, and flash welding can be achieved without a protective atmosphere.
Special Considerations
The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 titanium alloy rod is susceptible to contamination by hydrogen from improper pickling, and by oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon during processes such as forging, heat treating, and brazing. This contamination could result in reduced ductility, negatively impacting notch sensitivity and forming characteristics.

Grade 2 Titanium Rod
Corrosion resistance
Avoid using titanium with strong reducing acids, fluoride solutions, pure oxygen, or anhydrous ***.
General corrosion
Grade 2 titanium exhibits excellent corrosion resistance in diverse media, as detailed in Table 1. CP titanium stands resilient in various environments, including:
- Seawater and brines
- Inorganic salts
- Moist *** gas
- Alkaline solutions
- Oxidizing acids
- Organics and organic acids
- Sulfur compounds
Crevice corrosion
CP titanium demonstrates exemplary resistance to crevice corrosion in saline environments, outperforming stainless steels. It maintains its integrity at temperatures below 80°C (176°F), irrespective of pH, even in super chlorinated conditions.
Stress corrosion cracking
Grade 2 titanium exhibits superior resistance to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in hot chloride solutions, making it completely immune to sec in seawater.
Erosion Corrosion
Titanium demonstrates exceptional resistance to erosion in flowing environments.
In seawater with velocities up to 130 ft/sec (40 m/sec), titanium shows negligible corrosion. The presence of abrasive particles, such as sand, only minimally affects the material.
Hydrogen Embrittlement
Titanium exposed to seawater does not significantly absorb hydrogen, even at elevated temperatures. Hydrogen absorption occurs only under specific conditions:
- The pH is < 3 or > 12.
- The temperature exceeds 176°F (80°C).
- A mechanism for hydrogen generation exists, such as a galvanic couple or impressed current.
Bio-Corrosion
Titanium alloys display a unique immunity to all forms of microbiologically influenced corrosion. Biofouling can occur in seawater but can be minimized through chlorination or increased water velocity in heat exchangers.
Corrosion Fatigue
Titanium maintains its fatigue performance in seawater, showing no reduction in fatigue endurance limits or *** growth rates compared to air.
Galvanic Corrosion
In the galvanic series, titanium is positioned near noble stainless steels and typically acts as the cathode when paired with other metals. This ensures titanium is unaffected by galvanic corrosion but may accelerate the corrosion of less noble metals. Coupling titanium with noble metals like graphite enhances its passivity.
Fatigue Properties
Grade 2 Titanium Rod maintains its fatigue properties in seawater, with no degradation in endurance limits or *** growth rates.
Weldability
CP2 Grade Titanium Rod is highly weldable with proper precautions. Due to titanium's reactivity, an inert gas shield is necessary for both the OD and ID of the rod, and the material must be free from grease or oil contamination.
Grade 2 Titanium Rod is often welded via manual or automatic TIG welding, with or without filler wire. To minimize the heat affected zone, low heat input should be used. Post weld heat treatment is typically not required.
