Duplex 2205 Round Bar is an exceptional duplex ferritic-austenitic stainless steel bar, boasting a composition of 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel. As the most widely used duplex stainless steel grade, it offers double the yield strength of standard austenitic grades. It stands out for its impressive fatigue resistance and unparalleled resilience against stress corrosion, cracking, crevice corrosion, pitting, erosion, and general corrosion in the harshest of environments.

CORROSION RESISTANCE
- With its substantial chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content, Duplex 2205 surpasses 316 and 316L in corrosion resistance in most settings
- These elements also grant high resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, even in oxidizing and acidic conditions
- Resistant to chloride stress corrosion cracking and effective at temperatures up to 302°F (150°C)
- Ferrite presence enhances performance in caustic environments
HEAT RESISTANCE
- Duplex 2205 showcases excellent oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures, akin to other duplex stainless steels
- However, it is prone to embrittlement at temperatures above 572°F (300°C); thus, it is not recommended for use above this threshold.
WELDING CHARACTERISTICS
- Offers excellent weldability
- Typically should not be welded without filler metal to prevent excessive ferrite formation
HEAT TREATMENT
- Annealing temperature range spans from 1868 to 2012°F (1020 to 1100°C)
- Cannot be hardened through heat treatment, but does work-harden
- Special measures are required to account for its higher thermal expansion coefficient to avoid warping and distortion
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING
Most producers recommend a hot forming temperature between 2010 and 2100°F (1100 to 1150°C). Non-compact shapes may have cooler edges, risking cracking in these regions.
PROCESSING - COLD FORMING
Duplex 2205, renowned for its impressive formability across various fabrications, presents certain challenges due to its high strength. Even with powerful equipment, allowances must be made for the increased spring-back inherent to this grade, ensuring precision and reliability in every application.
MACHINABILITY
Machining Duplex stainless steel bar 2205 requires more effort compared to 300 series austenitic stainless steel. The increased cutting forces lead to quicker tool wear. To optimize machining: A) Employ a robust, rigid machine with strong tool and workpiece mounts; B) Minimize tool extensions to reduce vibration; C) Use the smallest necessary tool nose radius to maintain a sharp carbide edge while ensuring adequate strength; D) Plan the machining sequence to keep the depth of cut below the work-hardened layer from the previous operation.
