CORROSION RESISTANCE:

316L Stainless steel rod

  • Generally, more resilient than 304 in a variety of atmospheric environments and numerous corrosive media, thanks to its enhanced chromium.
    and molybdenum content.
  • Prone to pitting and crevice corrosion in warm chloride environments and stress corrosion cracking above 122°F (50°C).
  • Shows resistance to potable water with up to approximately 1000mg/L chlorides at ambient temperatures, which reduces to around 500mg/L at
    140°F (60°C).
  • Typically known as the 'marine grade stainless steel' - however, it is not immune to warm seawater.

HEAT RESISTANCE:

  • Exhibits excellent oxidation resistance in intermittent service up to 1600°F (870°C) and continuous service up to 1700°F (925°C).
  • Grade 316L provides superior resistance to carbide precipitation.

WELDING CHARACTERISTICS:

  • Offers outstanding weldability via all standard fusion methods, with or without filler metals.
  • Heavy welded sections in Grade 316 require post-weld annealing for optimal corrosion resistance, which is unnecessary for Grade 316L.

HEAT TREATMENT:

  • Annealing temperature range spans from 1900 to 2100°F (1038 to 1149°C).
  • Cannot be hardened by heat treatment.
  • Special care is required to mitigate a higher coefficient of thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

  • Most producers suggest a maximum forging temperature range of 2100°F to 2300°F.
  • Avoid forging below 1700°F (927°C) to maintain best properties.
  • Optimal corrosion resistance is achieved if the forgings receive a final anneal.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

  • 316/316L Stainless steel rods are extremely tough and ductile, making them suitable for easy cold working, including roll forming, swaging, cold heading, deep drawing,
    bending, etc., effortlessly.
  • Severely cold-formed parts should undergo annealing to relieve stress.

MACHINEABILITY:

  • Type 316/316L Stainless steel rods are more challenging to machine compared to Type 304, due to their toughness.
  • 316/316L machines produce chips that are robust and durable.
  • Utilize chip breakers and curlers for efficiency.
  • Employ the largest possible tool and ample cutting fluid.
  • Consider heavy positive feeds at low speeds since 316/316L work hardens rapidly.
