GENERAL PROPERTIES
- Grade 430 is a ferritic, straight chromium, non-hardenable stainless steel known for its exceptional corrosion resistance and excellent formability, coupled with practical mechanical properties. Its robust resistance makes it suitable for various chemical applications, while its primary uses are in automobile trim and appliance components.
- Grade 430F is the free-machining variant of Grade 430, available in bar form for use in automatic screw machines. Grade 434 is the molybdenum-enhanced version of Grade 430, sharing the same beneficial characteristics, with the addition of improved corrosion resistance due to the molybdenum component.
- ASTM A240/A240M outlines the specifications for 430-grade flat rolled products, including plates, sheets, and coils. Other products like forgings and bars have similar but distinct qualities as per their specifications. The properties for Grade 430F in bar form are detailed in ASTM A582.

CORROSION RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 material shows good resistance to a wide range of corrosive environments and some organic acids. The highest levels of corrosion resistance are achieved when highly polished or ground. Overall, its resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion is comparable to grade 304. Like all ferritic grades, 430 exhibits very high resistance to stress corrosion cracking.
- The non-free machining grade, 430F, demonstrates significantly reduced resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, similar to other high-sulfur free machining grades.
HEAT RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 can resist oxidation up to 870°C in intermittent service and 815°C in continuous service. Extended heating in the 400-600°C range can cause embrittlement at room temperature, which can be mitigated by annealing.
HEAT TREATMENT:
- Solution Annealing - Heat to 815-845°C, hold for ½ hour per 25mm of thickness, then slow furnace cool to 600°C, followed by quick air cooling. Slow cooling from 540-400°C will cause embrittlement.
- Sub-Critical Anneal - Heat to 760-815°C, then air cool or water quench.
- This grade cannot be hardened by thermal treatment.
WELDING:
- If welding is necessary, pre-heat at 150-200°C.
- To alleviate embrittlement in the weld metal and heat-affected zones, a post-weld anneal at 790-815°C is recommended.
- Grain refinement is not achievable through this process.
MACHINING:
- This material is easier to machine compared to standard austenitic grades like 304.
- However, there remains a tendency for galling and pick-up on the cutting tool.
- Lightly drawn bars are easier to machine than those in the annealed condition.
- Grade 430F, a free machining variant of 430, is significantly easier to machine.
FABRICATION:
- The lower work hardening rate makes bending and forming easier than with grade 304.
- However, lower ductility limits very severe operations.
- For severe bends, ensure the bend axis is at right angles to the rolling direction.
- Severe cold heading of 430 wire is feasible.
