Type 201 stainless steel is an austenitic chromium-nickel-manganese alloy designed to conserve nickel. As a cost-effective alternative to traditional Cr-Ni stainless steels like 301 and 304, Type 201 replaces nickel with manganese and nitrogen. While it cannot be hardened by heat treatment, it achieves high tensile strength through cold working. In its annealed state, Type 201 is non-magnetic but gains magnetism post-cold working. This mid-range stainless steel is widely used in appliances, cookware, sinks, utensils, catering equipment, automotive parts, fixtures, carriages, and window trims due to its structural strength. However, its susceptibility to pitting and crevice corrosion, especially in seawater environments, limits its viability for outdoor structural applications.
