INHERENT PROPERTIES
Duplex 2205 is an advanced two-phase, ferritic-austenitic stainless steel enriched with 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel. As the most widely utilized duplex stainless steel grade, it boasts a yield strength twice that of conventional austenitic grades. Moreover, it offers unparalleled fatigue strength and superb resistance to stress corrosion cracking, crevice, pitting, erosion, and general corrosion, even in the most demanding environments.
VERSATILE APPLICATIONS
- Chemical processing, transport, and storage - pressure vessels, tanks, piping, and heat exchangers
- Oil and gas exploration and processing equipment - piping, tubing, and heat exchangers
- Marine environments and other high-chloride settings
- Effluent scrubbing systems
- Pulp and paper industry - digesters, bleaching equipment, and stock-handling systems
- Cargo tanks for ships and trucks
- Food processing equipment
- Biofuels plants
INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS
- ASTM/ASME: A240 UNS S32205/S31803
- EURONORM: 1.4462 X2CrNiMoN 22.5.3
- AFNOR: Z3 CrNi 22.05 AZ
- DIN: W.Nr 1.4462
UNPARALLELED CORROSION RESISTANCE
- Thanks to its elevated chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen contents, Duplex 2205 exhibits extraordinary corrosion resistance, surpassing 316 and 316L in most environments.
- These elements also afford it exceptional resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, even in rigorous oxidizing and acidic conditions.
- It withstands chloride stress corrosion cracking and temperatures up to approximately 302°F (150°C).
- The ferrite phase ensures optimal performance in caustic environments.
HEAT RESISTANCE
- Like other duplex stainless steels, Duplex 2205 delivers robust oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures.
- However, it is prone to embrittlement at temperatures exceeding 572°F (300°C) even with brief exposure; thus, it is not recommended for use above 572°F (300°C).
WELDING CHARACTERISTICS
- Exhibits excellent weldability.
- Should generally be welded with filler metal to prevent excessive ferrite formation.
HEAT TREATMENT
- The annealing temperature range is 1868 to 2012°F (1020 to 1100°C).
- Cannot be hardened by heat treatment, though Duplex 2205 work-hardens effectively.
- Special care is required to address its higher coefficient of thermal expansion and avoid warping and distortion.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING
- Leading producers of Duplex 2205 recommend a maximum hot forming temperature between 2010 and 2100°F (1100 to 1150°C). If the workpiece shape is not compact, edges may cool significantly faster than the bulk, risking cracking in these cooler regions.
PROCESSING - COLD FORMING
- Duplex 2205 demonstrates excellent formability across various fabrication processes. However, its high strength can present challenges, necessitating equipment with sufficient power and consideration for increased spring-back due to the material's robust nature.
MACHINABILITY
Processing Duplex 2205 is slightly more challenging than working with 300 series austenitic stainless steels. The requirement for higher cutting forces accelerates tool wear. Key machining guidelines include: A) Utilizing powerful, rigid machines with robust mounting for tools and workpieces, B) Minimizing vibration by shortening tool extension, C) Incorporating a minimal nose radius on the tool for sharp-edged carbides while maintaining strength, and D) Designing machining sequences to ensure cutting depth remains below the work-hardened layer of previous passes.
Features of 2205 Stainless Steel Coils
- Type 2205 is a duplex (austenitic/ferritic) stainless steel enriched with chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen, enhancing its performance and corrosion resistance compared to 304 and 316 stainless steels. The alloy's austenite/ferrite microstructure, combined with these additives, provides resistance to stress corrosion cracking, pitting, and ***-induced crevice corrosion. Alloy 2205 offers acceptable oxidation resistance up to 980°C but may become brittle with prolonged exposure to temperatures between 300°C and 1000°C. This stainless steel type is suitable for various applications, available in strip, coil, and sheet forms.
What are the commonly used surfaces of stainless steel coils?
The surface finish of 201 stainless steel coils can vary based on cold rolling processing methods and post-rolling treatments. Common surface treatments include NO.1, 2B, 4, HL, 6, 8, BA, TR hard, heavy rolling bright 2H, polished bright, among others:
- NO.1: This is the surface achieved after hot rolling, heat treatment, and pickling to remove black oxide scales formed during these processes. NO.1 has a silvery white, matte appearance and is typically used in industries requiring heat and corrosion resistance but not high surface gloss, such as the alcohol, chemical industries, and large container manufacturing.
- 2B: Different from the 2D surface, the 2B finish is achieved by a light roller, giving it a brighter appearance. The surface roughness Ra value ranges from 0.1 to 0.5μm, making it adaptable for most processing applications. This finish is ideal for the chemical, papermaking, petroleum, medical industries, and architectural projects like building curtain walls.
- TR Hard Surface: Known also as hard steel, TR stainless steel includes grades like 304 and 301, used in applications requiring high strength and hardness, such as railway vehicles, conveyor belts, springs, and washers. The hardening characteristics of austenitic stainless steel are utilized through cold working processes like rolling. The TR hard surface, which replaces the smoother 2B base, is achieved by light rolling without subsequent annealing, resulting in a hardened finish.
- Re-rolled Bright 2H: After the rolling operation, the stainless steel strip will undergo bright annealing, a process that ensures a pristine finish. Utilizing a continuous annealing line allows for rapid cooling of the strip as it moves at a speed of 60-80m/min. This meticulous procedure results in a 2H re-rolled bright surface, enhancing both the durability and visual appeal.
- No. 4: The No. 4 surface offers superior polishing, delivering a shine that surpasses No. 3. Achieved by polishing a cold-rolled stainless steel plate with a 2D or 2B surface and then refining with a 150-180# grit sanding belt, the surface roughness (Ra) measures between 0.2 and 1.5μm. Widely employed in the culinary, medical, architectural, and container industries, the No. 4 finish is a testament to quality and versatility.
- HL: The HL (hairline) surface finish, defined by the Japanese JIS standard, features a continuous abrasive texture created with a 150-240# grit belt. While the Chinese GB3280 standard lacks specific guidelines, the HL finish is popular in architectural decoration, including elevators, escalators, and exterior building facades, offering a sophisticated and enduring aesthetic.
- No. 6: Building upon the No. 4 surface, the No. 6 finish undergoes additional polishing using a Tampico brush or W63 grit material per GB2477 standards. This results in a surface with a refined metallic luster, soft reflection, and a non-imaging quality. Ideal for curtain walls, tassel decorations, and kitchenware, the No. 6 finish combines beauty with functionality.
- BA: BA is a surface treated through bright annealing after cold rolling. Conducted in a protective atmosphere to prevent oxidation, the bright annealing process retains the gloss of the cold-rolled surface. Further polished with high-precision smooth rollers, the BA finish achieves a surface roughness of 0.05-0.1μm, closely resembling a mirror. Applications span food utensils, household appliances, medical instruments, automotive parts, and decorative items.
- No. 8: Known for its mirror-like maximum reflectivity and absence of abrasive particles, the No. 8 finish is also referred to as 8K in the stainless steel industry. Often stemming from BA material, it requires minimal polishing to achieve a stunning mirror effect, making it a preferred choice for building entrances and interior décor.
