Grade 409 is a stabilized, ferritic, general-purpose stainless steel tube that boasts 11% chromium content. This composition makes it ideally suited for applications demanding robust oxidation and corrosion resistance where carbon steel and certain coated steels fall short. While Grade 409's chromium concentration results in lower corrosion resistance compared to grades like 304, 430, or 439, it still outperforms mild steel. The material excels in oxidation resistance and formability. Techniques such as roll forming, stretch bending, deep drawing, and press forming are highly effective for shaping 409. Post-annealing, 409 does not harden under cold treatment via warm and roll forming processes, including press or stretch bending. Despite its fair weldability, 409 is not recommended for shock-loaded structures due to grain growth in the heat-affected zones, which impacts mechanical quality. Predominantly used in automotive exhaust systems, this stainless steel tube offers substantial mechanical benefits for both the automotive and agricultural sectors. It effectively withstands corrosion from exhaust gases and high-temperature environments. While its mechanical properties are paramount, 409 is not advisable for decorative purposes.
