GENERAL PROPERTIES
Duplex 2205 is a premium two-phase, ferritic-austenitic stainless steel, blending 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel. Celebrated as the most widely used duplex grade, it boasts a yield strength twice that of standard austenitic grades. CORROSION RESISTANCE
- Thanks to its rich composition of chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen, Duplex 2205 surpasses 316 and 316L in corrosion resistance across most environments.
- Its elements grant it remarkable resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, even in aggressive and acidic solutions.
- Withstands chloride stress corrosion cracking and temperatures up to approximately 302°F (150°C).

HEAT RESISTANCE
- Like other duplex stainless steels, Duplex 2205 exhibits excellent oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures.
- However, it becomes susceptible to embrittlement above 572°F (300°C) and should not be used beyond this temperature.
WELDING CHARACTERISTICS
- Shows commendable weldability.
- Avoid welding without filler metal to prevent excessive ferrite formation.
HEAT TREATMENT
- The annealing temperature ranges from 1868 to 2012°F (1020 to 1100°C).
- Cannot be hardened through heat treatment, but it does work-harden.
- Special measures are needed to account for a higher thermal expansion coefficient to prevent warping and distortion.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING
- Producers recommend a maximum hot forming temperature between 2010 and 2100°F (1100 to 1150°C). If the work piece is not compact, cooler edges can lead to cracking.
PROCESSING - COLD FORMING
- Duplex 2205 demonstrates exceptional formability across various fabrications. The high tensile strength of Duplex 2205, however, can present challenges. Even with adequately powered equipment, considerations must be made for increased spring-back due to the grade's robust strength.
MACHINABILITY
Duplex 2205 is marginally more challenging to machine compared to the 300 series austenitic stainless steels. It demands higher cutting forces, leading to accelerated tool wear. Key machining guidelines include: A) Employ powerful, rigid machines with extremely secure mounting of tools and workpieces, B) Minimize vibration by reducing tool extension length, C) Apply a minimal nose radius on the tool, maintaining sharpness with adequate strength for carbide tips, and D) Design machining operations to ensure the depth of cut penetrates below the work-hardened layer from prior passes.

- Type 2205 is a sophisticated duplex (austenitic/ferritic) stainless steel, enriched with chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen. These elements significantly enhance its performance and corrosion resistance over 304 and 316 stainless steels. The alloy's distinct austenite/ferrite structure and its additives provide robust resistance to stress corrosion cracking, pitting, and chloride-induced crevice corrosion. Type 2205 also offers commendable oxidation resistance up to 980°C, though its brittleness between 300°C to 1000°C limits its usage to specific applications. Available in strips, coils, and sheets, Type 2205 serves a multitude of applications.
What are the commonly used surfaces of stainless steel coils?
The surface finish of 201 stainless steel coils is dictated by their cold rolling processes and subsequent surface treatments. These finishes include NO.1, 2B, 4, HL, 6, 8, BA, TR hard, heavy rolling bright 2H, polished bright, among others.
- NO.1: This is the surface achieved after hot rolling, heat treatment, and pickling of stainless steel strips. It effectively removes black oxide scale through processes like pickling during hot rolling and heat treatment. The NO.1 surface is silvery-white and matte, ideal for heat and corrosion-resistant applications where high surface gloss is unnecessary, such as in the alcohol industry, chemical industry, and large containers.
- 2B: The 2B surface, unlike the 2D finish, is achieved through light rolling to produce a brighter finish. The surface roughness Ra value, typically ranging from 0.1 to 0.5μm, is common for many processing types. This highly adaptable surface is suitable for diverse industries including chemicals, papermaking, petroleum, medical, and even architectural applications like building curtain walls.
- TR hard surface: TR stainless steel, also known as hard steel, includes grades like 304 and 301, which are ideal for high strength and hardness applications such as railway vehicles, conveyor belts, springs, and washers. The cold working methods, such as rolling, leverage the work hardening properties of austenitic stainless steel to enhance the material's strength and hardness. Unlike the uniformly flat 2B base surface, TR hard materials undergo gentle rolling without subsequent annealing, resulting in a unique hard surface finish.
- Re-rolled bright 2H: After the rolling operation, the stainless steel strip undergoes a bright annealing process. Utilizing a continuous annealing line, the strip is rapidly cooled while traveling at impressive speeds of 60-80m/min. This meticulous process results in a 2H re-rolled bright surface finish, radiating quality and precision.
- No. 4: The No. 4 surface boasts an excellent polishing effect, brighter than No. 3. It is achieved by polishing cold-rolled stainless steel with a 2D or 2B surface, followed by using a 150-180# grit sanding belt. This process ensures the surface roughness (Ra) falls between 0.2 and 1.5μm. No. 4 surfaces find widespread application in restaurants, cooking equipment, medical devices, architectural decorations, containers, and more.
- HL: The HL surface, also known as a hairline finish, adheres to the Japanese JIS standard, which specifies a continuous hairline abrasive finish achieved with a 150-240# abrasive belt. Though the Chinese GB3280 standard is less explicit, the HL surface remains a popular choice for architectural decoration, including elevators, escalators, and exterior walls.
- No. 6: The No. 6 surface is an advanced finish derived from further polishing No. 4 with a Tampico brush or a W63 grit abrasive, as per GB2477. This finish offers excellent metallic luster, softness, weak reflection, and no imaging, making it ideal for curtain walls, tassel decorations, and cooking supplies.
- BA: The BA surface is a result of bright annealing post-cold rolling, performed in a protective atmosphere to prevent oxidation and maintain the cold-rolled gloss. The final touch is a polish with a high-precision smooth roller, enhancing surface brightness. The surface roughness, measured at 0.05-0.1μm, is nearly mirror-like. BA surfaces are perfect for various applications such as food utensils, household appliances, medical equipment, automotive parts, and decorations.
- No. 8: The mirror surface, known for its maximum reflectivity and absence of abrasive particles, is often referred to as the 8K board in the stainless steel deep processing industry. BA material serves as the raw material for mirror processing, requiring just polishing to achieve a stunning finish. This surface is prominently used in building entrances and interior decor.
