GENERAL PROPERTIES
- Grade 430 is a ferritic, straight chromium, non-hardenable stainless steel that masterfully blends exceptional corrosion resistance with superb formability and functional mechanical properties. Its robust resistance to various chemicals makes it ideal for a broad spectrum of applications, particularly in automobile trim and appliance components.
- Grade 430F is the free-machining variant of Grade 430, manufactured in bar form for seamless use in automatic screw machines. Grade 434, also a counterpart of Grade 430, contains molybdenum to further enhance its corrosion resistance while maintaining the same advantageous properties.
- ASTM A240/A240M outlines the precise characteristics of Grade 430 for flat-rolled products like plates, sheets, and coils. Other forms, such as forgings and bars, possess similar yet distinct properties, as defined by their respective specifications. Grade 430F's attributes for bars are detailed in ASTM A582.

CORROSION RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 material showcases commendable resistance to a vast array of corrosive environments, including certain organic acids. Superior levels of corrosion resistance are achieved when highly polished or ground. Its resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion rivals that of Grade 304. Like other ferritic grades, 430 excels in resisting stress corrosion cracking.
- The non-free machining grade, 430F, demonstrates notably diminished resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, akin to other high sulfur free-machining grades.
HEAT RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 withstands oxidation up to 870°C in intermittent service and 815°C in continuous service. It may require prolonged heating in the 400-600°C range to avoid becoming brittle at room temperature. Annealing can effectively counteract this brittleness.
HEAT TREATMENT:
- Solution Annealing - Heat to 815-845°C, maintain for 30 minutes per 25mm of thickness, then gradually furnace cool to 600°C before rapid air cooling. Slow cooling between 540-400°C can result in embrittlement.
- Sub-Critical Anneal - Heat to 760-815°C followed by air cooling or water quenching.
- This grade is not hardenable through thermal treatment.
WELDING:
- Pre-heat between 150-200°C if welding is necessary.
- Embrittlement in the weld metal and heat-affected zone can be effectively alleviated by post-weld annealing at a precise temperature range of 790-815°C.
- It is important to note that grain refinement does not occur in this process.
MACHINING:
- Compared to standard austenitic grades such as 304, this material is easier to machine.
- However, there remains a tendency for galling and material pick-up on the cutting tool.
- Bars that have undergone light drawing are notably easier to machine than those in the annealed condition.
- Grade 430F, the free machining variant of 430, is significantly easier to machine.
FABRICATION:
- The lower work hardening rate makes bending and forming operations somewhat easier compared to grade 304.
- However, its reduced ductility limits the feasibility of very severe forming operations.
- Severe bends should be executed with the bend axis perpendicular to the rolling direction for optimal results.
- Severe cold heading of 430 wire is feasible under the right conditions.
