Grade 409 is a stabilized ferritic general purpose stainless steel tube containing 11% chromium. It is particularly suitable for applications that require oxidation or corrosion resistance that carbon steel and some coated steels cannot provide. 409 tube exhibits remarkable oxidation resistance and formability, making it an excellent choice for various industrial applications. Although its chromium concentration offers lower corrosion resistance compared to grades such as 304, 430, or 439, it significantly outperforms mild steel. The 409 tube is ideal for roll forming, stretch bending, deep drawing, and press forming. Post-annealing processes ensure it maintains flexibility without hardening under cold treatment, facilitating press and stretch bending operations. While its weldability is fair, it's crucial to avoid using it in shock-loaded structures due to grain growth in the heat-affected zone, which affects mechanical integrity. Predominantly used in automotive exhaust systems, the 409 stainless steel tube is also valuable in agricultural machinery. Its mechanical properties are particularly advantageous against the corrosive effects of exhaust gases and high-temperature conditions. However, it is not recommended for decorative applications where aesthetic appeal is paramount.
