Type 409 Stainless Steel (UNS S40900) is a stabilized ferritic stainless steel boasting superior oxidation and corrosion resistance compared to carbon steel. Its ease of manufacture, coupled with excellent corrosion resistance and cost-effectiveness, has significantly increased its utilization in automotive exhaust systems and various other applications. Per ASTM A240, Type 409 stainless steel is categorized into three (3) subtypes: UNS S40910, UNS S40920, and UNS S40930, each with distinct Ti or Nb stabilization requirements. Unless specified otherwise by the purchaser, any of these compositions may be supplied as UNS S40900. This grade is also available in improved formability variants, commonly referred to in the industry as 'High Performance' or 'Ultra Form' stainless steel.

Grade 409
- Grade 409 is a titanium-stabilized ferritic stainless steel, celebrated for its versatility. This chromium-infused material is primarily utilized in automotive exhaust systems, offering a superb blend of mechanical qualities, corrosion resistance, and weldability, especially under high-temperature conditions.
- ASTM requirements have evolved, with flat rolled steel now adhering to specifications such as ASTM A240M. Sub-grades like S40910, S40920, and S40930 are employed instead of the widespread Grade 409 designation.
- These materials are stabilized to various degrees using titanium, niobium, or a combination thereof. Any of these could be certified as S40900 (Grade 409). Notably, ASTM A268M lists standard Grade 409 specifically for tube applications.
Corrosion Resistance:
- Grade 409 stands resilient against both atmospheric and exhaust gas corrosion. While a light surface rust may develop, it serves as a protective layer against further corrosion, albeit unsuitable for aesthetic purposes. Its corrosion resistance rivals that of 3CR12 and 12% chromium martensitic grades (like 410), though it falls short of the 17% chromium grade 430.
Heat resistance
- Grade 409 excels in heat resistance, withstanding scaling in intermittent service up to 815°C and continuous service up to 675°C. However, these limits can vary based on the specific service environment.
Heat Treatment
- For optimal annealing, heat Grade 409 to 790-900 degrees Celsius and then cool it in the air. Note that this grade cannot be hardened through heat treatment.
Welding
- Grade 409 is effortlessly weldable. Pre-heating to 150-260°C is recommended. While Grade 409 or Grade 430 electrodes or filler rods are suitable, using Grade 309 rods or electrodes is pre-qualified per AS 1554.6, yielding a more ductile weld.
- Post-weld annealing at 760-815°C significantly enhances weld ductility.
Welding small sections often doesn't require post-weld annealing. Automotive exhaust tubing is typically welded autogenously, meaning no filler metal is used.
To prevent grain formation effects, all welding should be performed with minimal heat input.

Ideal for automotive exhaust systems, including catalytic converters and mufflers.

- ASTM A268M outlines the parameters for Grade 409 in annealed tubing. Meanwhile, ASTM A240M defines the composition for additional grades used in coil and sheet applications. Specifications for other products may present similar yet distinct properties.

- Type 409 stainless steel boasts excellent formability, effortlessly accommodating cutting, blanking, stretch forming, and drawing. Its formability characteristics closely mirror those of carbon steel.
