904 alloy (N08904) stainless steel stands out as a high-alloy austenitic product designed to endure severe corrosion. Its impressive composition ensures robust corrosion resistance.
904L stainless steel is a non-stabilized austenitic stainless steel with a low carbon level and a unique high alloy composition that includes copper. This enhances its resistance to strong reducing acids like sulfuric acid. Additionally, it offers remarkable resistance to stress corrosion, cracking, and crevice corrosion. Non-magnetic with exceptional formability, toughness, and welding capabilities, 904L stainless steel contains a high concentration of costly elements such as molybdenum and nickel.
904L grade stainless steel demonstrates exceptional resistance to hot seawater and chloride attack. Its high nickel content provides outstanding resistance to stress corrosion cracking. The addition of copper further enhances its resilience against sulfuric acid and other reducing agents in both corrosive and mild environments. The corrosion resistance of 904L grade steel falls between super austenitic steels containing 6% molybdenum and standard 316L austenitic steel. Grade 904L is more susceptible to stress corrosion cracking than grades 304L and 310L, which lack molybdenum. To achieve the highest resistance to stress corrosion in sensitive environments, solution treatment is recommended following cold working.

Grade 904L stainless steel tubes excel in resistance to warm seawater and chloride attacks. Their high resistance to stress corrosion cracking is thanks to the substantial nickel content in their composition. Additionally, the copper in these grades enhances resistance to sulfuric acid and other reducing agents, whether in harsh or mild conditions.
Featuring intermediate corrosion resistance, grade 904L stainless steel stands between super austenitic grades with 6% molybdenum and standard 316L austenitic grades. While less resistant than 304L and 310L grades, which lack molybdenum, 904L needs solution treatment after cold working to maximize stress corrosion cracking resistance under critical environments.
Grade 904L stainless steels boast impressive oxidation resistance. However, the structural stability of this grade diminishes at high temperatures, especially above 400°C.
Grade 904L stainless steels can undergo solution heat treatment at 1090 to 1175°C, followed by rapid cooling. This thermal treatment effectively hardens these grades.
Welding of grade 904L stainless steels is feasible using all conventional methods, with no need for pre-heat or post-weld heat treatments. Despite its susceptibility to hot cracking in constrained weldments, 904L electrodes and rods are recommended for welding this grade according to AS 1554.6.
Grade 904L stainless steel tubes are high-purity steels with minimal sulfur content, facilitating machining with standard methods. These grades can bend readily to small radii under cold conditions. Although subsequent annealing is generally unnecessary, it should be conducted under severe stress corrosion cracking scenarios.
Major applications of grade 904L stainless steel tubes include:
