CORROSION RESISTANCE:

  • Baosteel 17-4 pH Stainless Steel Round Rod Hot Rolled for Aviation offers superior resistance to corrosive attacks, outperforming any standard hardenable stainless steel.
  • Its robust corrosion resistance is comparable to the highly regarded Alloy 304 in most common media.
  • Demonstrates excellent corrosion resistance across a variety of industries, including chemical, petroleum, dairy, and food processing sectors.
  • However, it can be susceptible to crevice or pitting attack when exposed to stagnant sea water for extended periods.

WELDABILITY:

  • This alloy can be welded successfully using most common fusion and resistance welding techniques.
  • Note: It is not recommended for joining by oxyacetylene welding.
  • Generally, pre-heating is not required for welding operations.
  • However, the inter-pass temperature must be carefully controlled and limited to 248°F.
  • For the best weld toughness, complete heat treatment post-welding is advised.

ELEVATED TEMPERATURE USE:

  • This material exhibits excellent oxidation resistance up to temperatures of approximately 1100°F.
  • Long-term exposure to elevated temperatures may lead to reduced toughness in the precipitation-hardened conditions.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

  • For forging, heat uniformly to 2150-2200°F and hold for half an hour per inch of thickness.
  • The ideal temperature range for hot forming lies between 650-900°F, while the alloy is still austenitic.
  • To ensure optimal hardening conditions, re-heat treatment of forgings at 1875-1925°F is necessary.
  • Cool the forgings to below 90°F to refine the grain structure.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

  • Alloy 17-4 is limited to mild cold forming operations due to its hardness in the annealed (solution treated) condition.
  • For severe cold working, heat treating the material to condition H1150 is recommended to prevent cracking.
  • A bend radius exceeding 7T is often required for cold forming.
  • To enhance stress corrosion resistance after cold forming, re-aging at the precipitation-hardening temperature is advisable.

MACHINABILITY:

  • This alloy can be machined effectively in both solution-treated and precipitation-hardening conditions.
