431 Stainless Steel Bar Material boasts exceptional corrosion resistance, making it suitable for various corrosive environments. While it offers some resistance to salt water in cold, southern waters, it may not perform as well in warm, tropical waters. Comparatively, its corrosion resistance is on par with or slightly less than 304 Grade Material. Optimal performance is achieved when the material maintains a smooth surface in a hardened and tempered state.
This material resists scaling at intermittent temperatures up to 925°C and continuous temperatures up to 870°C. However, it is generally not advised for use above the relevant tempering temperature due to potential reductions in mechanical properties.
Full Anneal: Not practical for this grade due to its tendency to harden even with slow cooling. Process Anneal: Heat to 620-660°C, then air cool.
Harden by heating to 980-1065°C, holding for about 30 minutes, then quench in air or oil. Pre-heating at 760-790°C may benefit complex parts or those already hardened. Temper according to mechanical needs, as detailed in the accompanying table.
Avoid the tempering range of 425-600°C due to potential reductions in impact toughness, though the effect is less severe compared to other martensitic grades.
Welding is challenging due to the risk of cracking. A pre-heat of 200-300°C is advisable before welding. While a Grade 410 filler rod is usable, Grades 308L, 309, or 310 can produce more ductile welds if matching properties are not essential. Post-weld, heat treat at 650°C.
In its annealed state, this grade is relatively easy to machine. However, machining becomes challenging if hardened above 30HRC. The Ugima Improved Machinability version of Grade 431 significantly enhances achievable machining speeds and tool life.
Nuts and bolts, propeller shafting, pump shafts, beater bars, marine hardware.
These properties are specified for bar products in ASTM A276. Similar, yet not necessarily identical properties, are specified for other products like plates and forgings in their respective specifications.
