SPECIFICATIONS
AMS 4928 - Bars, Forgings, and Forging Stock (Annealed)
AMS 4965 - Bars, Forgings (Solution treated and aged)
AMS 4967 - Bars, Forgings (Annealed, Heat Treatable)
HEAT TREATMENT
- For applications requiring high hardness, tensile strength, and fatigue strength, annealing can be conducted at 1,700-1,900°F (927-1,038°C).
DAXUN 6-4™ Grade 5 alloy offers versatile heat treatment options. - 1. Anneal: 1,275-1,400°F (691-760°C), ½ to 2 hours, air or furnace cool
- 2. Stress Relief Anneal: 1,000-1,200°F (538-649°C), 1 to 8 hours, air or furnace cool
- 3. Solution Heat Treat: 1,675-1,750°F (913-954°C), 1 hour, water quench
- 4. Aging: 975-1,025°F (524-552°C), 4 to 8 hours - air cool
In the solution treated and aged state, rapid quenching of small sections achieves optimum properties, whereas larger sections and/or delayed quenching may result in suboptimal properties.
HARDNESS
Typical hardness in the annealed state ranges from Rockwell C 30-34, whereas in the solution and aged state, it ranges from Rockwell C 35-39.
Forgeability/Formability
- The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar is optimally forged at 1,750°F (954°C) with a final forging temperature of 1,450°F (788°C). A minimum 35% reduction is recommended to achieve the best properties.
- The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar presents challenges when formed at room temperature, even in its annealed state. To undertake severe forming operations like bending or stretching, the material should be annealed and treated at elevated temperatures up to 1,200°F (649°C) without compromising its mechanical properties. Hot sizing or forming is achievable through creep forming within the 1,000 - 1,200°F (538 - 649°C) range.
Machinability
For machining the Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar, methods used for austenitic stainless steel are applicable. Employ slow machining speeds and high feeds with rigid tools, while applying generous amounts of non-chlorinated cutting fluids for optimal results.
Weldability
The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy rod can be efficiently welded both in the annealed state and in the solution and partially aged condition, with aging occurring during post-weld heat treatment. To ensure purity, precautions against contamination from oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen are necessary. Fusion welding is best performed within an inert gas chamber or shielded with inert gas to protect the molten metal and adjacent heated zones. Spot, seam, and flash welding can be executed without a protective atmosphere.
Special Considerations
The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 titanium alloy rod can suffer from contamination by hydrogen during improper pickling and by oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon during forging, heat treating, and brazing. Such contamination leads to reduced ductility, adversely impacting notch sensitivity and forming characteristics.

Grade 2 Titanium Rod - Ideal for applications requiring excellent corrosion resistance and durability.
Corrosion resistance - Ensuring longevity and reliability in harsh environments.
Titanium should not be used with strong reducing acids, fluoride solutions, pure oxygen, or anhydrous *** - Follow these guidelines to prevent material degradation.
General corrosion
The general corrosion rates for Grade 2 titanium in a variety of media are shown in Table 1. CP titanium exhibits good corrosion resistance to a wide variety of environments including:
- Seawater and brines - Exceptional resistance for marine applications.
- Inorganic salts - Reliable performance in chemically aggressive environments.
- Moist *** gas - Superior material integrity in ***-rich atmospheres.
- Alkaline solutions - Excellent durability in high pH environments.
- Oxidizing acids - Robust resistance to corrosive acid attacks.
- Organics and organic acids - Versatile protection against varied organic compounds.
- Sulfur compounds - Enhanced resistance in sulfur-rich conditions.
Crevice corrosion
CP titanium exhibits good resistance to crevice corrosion in salt solutions compared to stainless steels. CP titanium will not exhibit crevice corrosion at temperatures under 80 °C ( 176°F) regardless of pH, even under super chlorinated conditions.
Stress corrosion cracking
Grade 2 titanium shows excellent resistance to stress corrosion (SCC) cracking in hot chloride solutions and is immune to sec in seawater.
Erosion corrosion
Titanium shows excellent resistance to erosion in flowing environments, ensuring long-lasting performance even in challenging conditions.
Seawater with velocities up to 130 ft/sec (40 m/sec) exhibits negligible effects on the material. Even with the presence of abrasive particles like sand, the corrosion impact remains minimal.
Hydrogen Embrittlement
Titanium shows no significant absorption of hydrogen when exposed to seawater, even at elevated temperatures. Hydrogen absorption typically only occurs under three specific conditions:
- The pH level is < 3 or > 12
- The temperature exceeds 176°F (80°C)
- A mechanism for hydrogen generation exists, such as a galvanic couple or an impressed current.
Bio-Corrosion
Titanium alloys exhibit an exceptional resistance to all forms of microbiologically influenced corrosion. While they do not show toxicity toward marine organisms, biofouling can occur. This issue can be mitigated by chlorination or increasing water velocity through a heat exchanger.
Corrosion Fatigue
Unlike many other materials, titanium does not experience a decrease in fatigue performance in seawater. Fatigue endurance limits and fatigue *** growth rates remain consistent whether tested in air or seawater.
Galvanic Corrosion
In the galvanic series, titanium is positioned towards the noble end near stainless steels and typically acts as the cathode when paired with other metals. Consequently, titanium remains unaffected by galvanic corrosion but can accelerate the corrosion of the other metal. Coupling titanium with more noble metals, such as graphite, enhances its passivity.
Fatigue Properties
Grade 2 Titanium Rod uniquely maintains its fatigue properties in the presence of seawater. Both fatigue endurance limits and fatigue *** growth rates are identical whether tested in air or seawater.
Weldability
CP2 Grade Titanium Rod is highly weldable when the necessary precautions are observed. Due to titanium's reactivity, an inert gas shield must be applied on both the OD and ID of the rod, and it must be free from any grease or oil contamination.
Grade 2 Titanium Rod is typically welded using manual or automatic TIG welding, with or without filler wire. To minimize the heat-affected zone, low heat input should be used. Post-weld heat treatment is generally not required.
