GENERAL PROPERTIES

316/316L stainless steel alloy is an austenitic stainless steel pipe containing molybdenum. The increased nickel and molybdenum content of this grade makes its overall corrosion resistance better than 304, especially with respect to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride conditions. In addition, 316/316L seamless pipe has excellent high temperature tensile, creep, and stress rupture strength, as well as excellent formability and weldability. 316L is a low carbon form of 316 that resists sensitization; therefore, it is widely used for large size welded components.

CORROSION RESISTANCE:

• With enhanced chromium and molybdenum content, 316 exhibits superior resistance compared to 304 in various atmospheric environments and many corrosive media.

WELDING CHARACTERISTICS:

• Boasting excellent weldability, 316 can be welded using all standard fusion techniques, with or without filler metals.

HEAT TREATMENT:

• The annealing temperature range is between 1900°F and 2100°F (1038°C to 1149°C).
• This alloy cannot be hardened through heat treatment.
• Special considerations are necessary to account for a higher coefficient of thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

• Most manufacturers advise a maximum forging temperature of 2100°F to 2300°F.
• Do not forge below 1700°F (927°C).
• Optimum corrosion resistance is achieved if the forgings receive a final anneal.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

• 316/316L, known for its toughness and ductility, can be easily cold worked through processes such as roll forming, swaging, cold heading, and deep drawing.
