GENERAL PROPERTIES
Duplex 2205 is a premium two-phase, ferritic, austenitic stainless steel enriched with 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel. It stands as the most widely utilized duplex stainless steel grade, boasting a yield strength twice that of conventional austenitic grades. This alloy excels with outstanding fatigue strength and unparalleled resistance to stress corrosion cracking, crevice, pitting, erosion, and general corrosion even in the most challenging environments.

CORROSION RESISTANCE
- Thanks to its rich content of chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen, Duplex 2205 exhibits superior corrosion resistance compared to 316 and 316L in a majority of environments.
- The blend of chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen also delivers exceptional resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, even in oxidizing and acidic solutions.
- Duplex 2205 is resilient against chloride stress corrosion cracking up to temperatures of approximately 302°F (150°C)
- The presence of ferrite ensures excellent performance in caustic environments.
HEAT RESISTANCE
- Like other duplex stainless steels, Duplex 2205 offers commendable oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures.
- Susceptible to embrittlement when exposed to temperatures above 572°F (300°C) even for brief durations; thus, Duplex 2205 is not recommended for use beyond this temperature threshold.
WELDING CHARACTERISTICS
- Exhibits good weldability
- Generally, welding without filler metal should be avoided as it may lead to excessive ferrite.
HEAT TREATMENT
- The annealing temperature ranges from 1868 to 2012°F (1020 to 1100°C).
- While it cannot be hardened by heat treatment, Duplex 2205 does work-harden.
- Special considerations are necessary to accommodate a higher coefficient of thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING
- Most producers recommend a maximum hot forming temperature between 2010 and 2100°F (1100 to 1150°C). If the shape of the workpiece isn't compact, edges may cool significantly faster than the bulk, risking cracks in the cooler regions.
PROCESSING - COLD FORMING
- Duplex 2205 has demonstrated excellent formability across varied fabrications. However, its high strength can pose challenges. Even with powerful equipment, allowances must be made for higher spring-back due to the grade's robust strength.
EXCEPTIONAL MACHINABILITY
Duplex 2205 poses a slightly greater challenge in processing compared to the 300 series austenitic stainless steels. It demands higher cutting forces, leading to accelerated tool wear. Here are some machining guidelines for optimal results: A) Employ powerful and rigid machines with extremely robust mounting for both tools and workpieces, B) Minimize vibration by maintaining the shortest possible tool extension, C) Use a nose radius on the tool that is no larger than necessary, with sharp-edged carbides offering sufficient strength, and D) Plan machining sequences to ensure that each cut penetrates below the work-hardened layer from previous passes.

- Type 2205 stands as a superior duplex (austenitic/ferritic) stainless steel, enriched with chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen, which significantly enhances its performance and corrosion resistance over 304 and 316 stainless steels. Common Surface Finishes for Stainless Steel Coils
The surface finish of 201 stainless steel coil can vary based on the cold rolling processing techniques and subsequent surface treatments employed. These treatments include NO.1, 2B, 4, HL, 6, 8, BA, TR hard, heavy rolling bright 2H, polished bright, among other specialized finishes:
- NO.1: NO.1 finish is achieved through hot rolling, heat treatment, and pickling of stainless steel strip. This process removes the black oxide scale formed during hot rolling and heat treatment, leaving a silvery white, matte surface. NO.1 finish is predominantly used in industries requiring heat and corrosion resistance without a need for high surface gloss, such as the alcohol industry, chemical sector, and for large containers.
- 2B: The 2B finish, unlike the 2D surface, is smoothed with a light roller, resulting in a brighter surface. The surface roughness Ra value typically ranges from 0.1 to 0.5μm, making it suitable for most processing types. This versatile finish is ideal for the chemical, papermaking, petroleum, medical industries, and is widely used in building curtain walls.
- TR Hard Surface: TR stainless steel, also known as hard steel, includes grades such as 304 and 301. These are utilized for products requiring high strength and hardness, like railway vehicles, conveyor belts, springs, and washers. The process leverages the work-hardening properties of austenitic stainless steel, enhancing the strength and hardness of the plates through cold working methods like rolling. To preserve the gentle flatness of the 2B base surface, hard materials are lightly rolled by a few to several tens of percent without undergoing annealing post-rolling. Consequently, the TR hard surface is the post-cold rolling finish.
- Re-Rolled Bright 2H: Following the rolling process, the stainless steel strip undergoes bright annealing. This involves rapid cooling via a continuous annealing line, where the strip moves at speeds of 60-80m/min. The result is a 2H re-rolled bright surface finish.
- No. 4: The No. 4 surface offers superior polishing results with a brightness level higher than No. 3. It is achieved by polishing a cold-rolled stainless steel plate with a 2D or 2B finish, followed by sanding with a 150-180# grit belt. The surface roughness (Ra) ranges between 0.2 and 1.5μm. This polished surface is extensively utilized in various industries, including restaurant and cooking equipment, medical devices, architectural decorations, containers, and more.
- HL: The HL surface, known as a hairline finish, is characterized by a continuous abrasive pattern. According to the Japanese JIS standard, this finish is achieved using a 150-240# abrasive belt. The Chinese GB3280 standard lacks clear specifications. The HL finish is predominantly used in architectural applications, such as elevators, escalators, and exterior walls.
- No. 6: The No. 6 surface is an enhancement over the No. 4 finish, polished further using a Tampico brush or W63 grit abrasive as per GB2477 standards. This surface boasts a refined metallic sheen, softness, and low reflectivity without imaging, making it ideal for curtain walls, decorative tassels, and cooking supplies.
- BA: The BA surface is achieved through a bright heat treatment post-cold rolling. This process involves annealing in a protective atmosphere to prevent oxidation, preserving the cold-rolled gloss. Further polishing with high-precision smooth rollers enhances the surface brightness. The roughness is between 0.05-0.1μm, closely resembling a mirror finish. The BA surface is versatile, suitable for food utensils, household appliances, medical instruments, automotive components, and decorative purposes.
- No. 8: The No. 8 surface, also referred to as a mirror finish, offers maximum reflectivity without abrasive particles. Often called an 8K board in the stainless steel processing industry, it is derived from BA material with additional polishing. This highly reflective and aesthetically pleasing surface is ideal for building entrances and interior decoration.
