What Is Duplex 2507 Stainless Steel?
Duplex 2507 stainless steel is an elite super duplex alloy with a low carbon content (up to 0.03%), around 25% chromium, 7% nickel, and 4% molybdenum. Engineered to meet the rigorous demands of applications that require both immense strength and superior corrosion resistance, Duplex 2507 is ideal for chemical process equipment, the petrochemical sector, and marine applications. Its remarkable resistance to chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking, coupled with its high chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content, ensures it offers outstanding protection against pitting, crevice, and general corrosion.
How Is Duplex 2507 Stainless Steel Made?
- The manufacturing of Duplex 2507 stainless steel aligns with the methods used for modern high-alloy steels. The process begins in an electric arc furnace, where scrap steel is melted and the desired alloys are added. The molten steel is then transferred to an AOD (argon oxygen decarburization) converter for critical processes like decarburization, sulfur refinement, and the removal of dissolved gases.
- During the AOD process, nitrogen is typically infused into the steel. The steel is subsequently directed to a ladle furnace for inclusion adjustments.
- Post these preliminary steps, the molten steel is moved to the casting operation, producing either single ingots (large metal blocks) or continuous blooms. These solid steel forms are then reheated and meticulously forged or rolled to the required thickness. A heat treatment called solution annealing is applied to ensure a consistent internal structure, which is then followed by a water quenching process.
- Fabrication of Duplex 2507 pipe materials can be executed using hot or cold forming techniques. For hot forming, the temperature range should be between 1024 °C and 1232 °C, followed by a solution annealing process at 1052-1125 °C minimum, and then a rapid water quench. Cold forming encompasses bending, deep drawing, extruding, and pressing, necessitating subsequent heat treatment with solution annealing and quenching.
How Does Duplex 2507 Stainless Steel Differ From Duplex Steel?
- Duplex 2507 stainless steel is classified as super duplex stainless steel. Duplex stainless steels are unique for their microstructure, which equally balances ferrite and austenite. This dual-phase structure imbues Duplex stainless steel with exceptional corrosion resistance and strong mechanical properties. However, corrosion resistance levels vary across different duplex steel grades. While all grades exhibit good resistance to localized corrosion such as pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking, the exact resistance depends on the specific grade and alloy mix. Duplex stainless steels are categorized into four groups based on their PREN (Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number). Super duplex stainless steels boast a PREN number of 38 to 45, underscoring their superior performance.
