GENERAL PROPERTIES
The 317L Stainless Steel Pipe boasts a molybdenum-enriched, low-carbon austenitic stainless steel composition. Enhanced with additional chromium, nickel, and molybdenum, this pipe offers superior resistance to corrosion and various chemicals, including sulfite, acetic, formic, citric, and tartaric acids. Its low carbon content ensures resistance to sensitization during welding, while providing exceptional creep, rupture stress, and tensile strength at high temperatures. Nonmagnetic when annealed, it may exhibit slight magnetism post-welding.
APPLICATIONS
The 317L seamless pipe is ideal for applications involving sulfur compounds, pulp liquors, acid dyes, acetylation and nitration mixtures, bleaching solutions, heavy coal and petroleum processing, and various chemicals. Additional uses for the 317L alloy include:

CORROSION RESISTANCE
- Exhibits exceptional corrosion resistance in challenging environments, particularly in acidic chloride settings.

- Its low carbon content ensures high resistance to intergranular corrosion.

HEAT RESISTANCE
- Chromium-nickel-molybdenum steels, including 317L, offer excellent oxidation resistance.
- Maintains a low scaling rate in normal atmospheres at temperatures up to 1600-1650°F (871-899°C).
WELDING CHARACTERISTICS
- Compatible with all common fusion and resistance welding methods, excluding oxyacetylene welding.
- For welding Type 317L steel, use AWS E317L/ER317L filler metal or austenitic low-carbon filler metals with higher molybdenum content, or nickel-base filler metals with sufficient chromium and molybdenum to surpass Type 317L's corrosion resistance.
MACHINABILITY
- To minimize work hardening, use low speeds and constant feeds.
- Tougher than 304 stainless, requiring the use of chip breakers for its long, stringy chips.
