General Properties
Duplex 2205 is a two-phase, ferritic-austenitic stainless steel distinguished by its 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel composition. As the most utilized duplex stainless steel grade, it boasts double the yield strength of typical austenitic grades. It excels in fatigue strength and offers outstanding resistance to stress corrosion cracking, crevice, pitting, erosion, and overall corrosion, even in the harshest environments.

Corrosion Resistance
- With its high chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content, Duplex 2205 offers superior corrosion resistance compared to 316 and 316L in most environments.
- The alloy's composition also provides remarkable resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, even in oxidizing and acidic solutions.
- Remarkably resistant to chloride stress corrosion cracking and effective up to temperatures around 302°F (150°C).
- The presence of ferrite ensures excellent performance in caustic environments.
Heat Resistance
- Similar to other duplex stainless steels, Duplex 2205 exhibits good oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures.
- Subject to embrittlement above 572°F (300°C), even for short exposures. Therefore, it is not recommended for use above this temperature.
Welding Characteristics
- Possesses excellent weldability, making it suitable for various applications.
- Generally should not be welded without filler metal due to the risk of excessive ferrite formation.
Heat Treatment
- Annealing should be conducted in the temperature range of 1868 to 2012°F (1020 to 1100°C).
- Duplex 2205 cannot be hardened by heat treatment but will work-harden over time.
- Special attention needed to account for a higher thermal expansion coefficient to prevent warping and distortion.
Processing - Hot Forming
- Most producers recommend hot forming at temperatures between 2010 and 2100°F (1100 to 1150°C). If the workpiece lacks compactness, there is a risk of cracking in cooler regions.
Processing - Cold Forming
- Duplex 2205 boasts impressive formability across various fabrications. However, its exceptional strength can introduce challenges. Even with sufficiently powerful equipment, the inherent high strength of Duplex 2205 results in considerable spring-back.
MACHINABILITY
Processing Duplex 2205 is somewhat more demanding than working with the 300 series austenitic stainless steels. It necessitates higher cutting forces, leading to accelerated tool wear. Recommended machining guidelines include: A) Employ powerful, rigid machines with robust, stable mounting for tools and workpieces, B) Minimize vibration by keeping tool extensions as short as possible, C) Utilize a nose radius on the tool that balances sharpness and strength, and D) Strategically design machining sequences to ensure cuts penetrate beneath any work-hardened layers from previous passes.
Features of 2205 Stainless Steel Coils
- Type 2205 is a high-performance duplex (austenitic/ferritic) stainless steel enriched with chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen. These elements enhance its performance and corrosion resistance compared to 304 and 316 stainless steels. Its unique austenite/ferrite microstructure and alloying additives provide excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking, pitting, and ***-induced crevice corrosion. Alloy 2205 can withstand oxidation up to 980°C for specific applications, though caution is needed as prolonged exposure between 300°C and 1000°C can embrittle the material. This versatile alloy is available in strips, coils, and sheets, suitable for a broad array of uses.
Common Surface Finishes of Stainless Steel Coils
The surface finish of 201 stainless steel coil varies based on the cold rolling methods and subsequent surface treatments. Available surface treatments include NO.1, 2B, 4, HL, 6, 8, BA, TR hard, heavy rolling bright 2H, polished bright, and more:
- NO.1: The NO.1 surface is achieved through hot rolling, heat treatment, and pickling, which removes black oxide scale formed during these processes. This matte, silvery-white finish is primarily used in industries requiring heat and corrosion resistance but not high surface gloss, such as the alcohol and chemical industries, and for large containers.
- 2B: The 2B surface is smoother and brighter than the 2D surface, achieved by light rolling. With a surface roughness Ra value ranging from 0.1 to 0.5μm, it is highly adaptable and suitable for industries like chemicals, papermaking, petroleum, medical applications, and building curtain walls.
- TR Hard Surface: Known as hard steel, TR stainless steel includes grades like 304 and 301. It's ideal for applications requiring high strength and hardness, such as railway vehicles, conveyor belts, springs, and washers. By leveraging the work hardening properties of austenitic stainless steel, the strength and hardness of the plates are enhanced through cold rolling, without subsequent annealing. This process yields a robust TR hard surface.
- Re-rolled Bright 2H: After the rolling operation, the stainless steel strip will undergo a bright annealing process. Utilizing a continuous annealing line, the strip can be rapidly cooled while it travels along the line at a swift pace of 60-80m/min. This meticulous procedure results in a 2H re-rolled bright surface finish, enhancing the strip's appearance and performance.
- No. 4: The No. 4 surface boasts an exceptional polishing effect, brighter than No. 3. Achieved by polishing the cold-rolled stainless steel plate with a 2D or 2B surface, followed by sanding with a belt of 150-180# grit. The surface roughness (Ra) is meticulously measured between 0.2 and 1.5μm. No. 4 surface is highly favored in various applications such as restaurants, cooking equipment, medical tools, architectural decorations, and containers.
- HL: The HL surface, often known as a hairline finish, is specified by the Japanese JIS standard for its continuous abrasive texture achieved with a 150-240# belt. Although the Chinese GB3280 standard is less precise, HL finishes are widely utilized in architectural decoration, including elevators, escalators, and exterior walls, offering a sophisticated and sleek appearance.
- No. 6: The No. 6 surface is refined further from No. 4 via polishing with a Tampico brush or W63 grit abrasive as per GB2477 standard. It features a brilliant metallic luster, gentle reflection, and no imaging, ideal for curtain walls, tassel decorations, and culinary tools due to its superior quality and aesthetic appeal.
- BA: BA surface undergoes a bright heat treatment post cold-rolling, ensuring it retains the gloss and smoothness of the cold-rolled surface. Annealing in a protective atmosphere and polishing with precision rollers enhance its surface brightness. With a surface roughness of 0.05-0.1μm, it closely resembles a mirror. BA surfaces are versatile, being used in food utensils, home appliances, medical devices, automotive components, and decorative applications.
- No. 8: The No. 8 surface, known as a mirror finish for its maximum reflectivity and absence of abrasive particles, is synonymous with the 8K board in the stainless steel processing industry. Ideal as a raw material for mirror processing, it requires only polishing to achieve a stunning, reflective surface, often used in building entrances and interior decorations for its stunning visual impact.
