431 Stainless Steel Bar Material boasts outstanding corrosion resistance against a diverse range of corrosive environments. In salt water, particularly in the cooler southern waters, it demonstrates some resistance, although it's less effective in the warmer tropical waters. Comparatively, the corrosion resistance of 431 Round Bar Material is on par with, or slightly less than, that of 304 Grade Material. Optimal performance is achieved with a smooth surface in a hardened and tempered state.
This material resists scaling during intermittent service up to 925°C and continuous service up to 870°C. However, usage above the recommended tempering temperature is generally discouraged due to potential reductions in mechanical properties.
For a full anneal, this grade is impractical due to its tendency to harden even when cooled slowly. A process anneal involves heating to 620-660°C followed by air cooling.
Hardening is achieved by heating to 980-1065°C, holding for about 30 minutes, then quenching in air or oil. For complex parts or those already hardened, pre-heating at 760-790°C can be beneficial. Tempering should be adjusted to meet mechanical requirements, referencing the accompanying temperature table.
Avoid tempering within the range of 425-600°C to prevent reduced impact toughness. While this effect is less pronounced than in most other martensitic grades, caution is still advised.
Welding this material can be challenging due to the risk of cracking. Pre-heating to 200-300°C is recommended before welding. While Grade 410 filler rod is an option, Grades 308L, 309, or 310 are preferable for more ductile welds, provided matching properties are not essential. Post-weld heat treatment at 650°C is advised.
In its annealed state, this grade is relatively easy to machine. However, when hardened beyond 30HRC, machining becomes more challenging. The Ugima Improved Machinability version of Grade 431 significantly enhances achievable machining speeds and tool life.
Common applications include nuts and bolts, propeller shafting, pump shafts, beater bars, and marine hardware.
The specified properties pertain to bar products under ASTM A276. While similar, properties for other products like plates and forgings have their own respective specifications.
