GENERAL PROPERTIES
- Grade 430 is a ferritic, straight chromium, non-hardenable grade that offers exceptional corrosion resistance and formability along with practical mechanical properties. Thanks to its superb resistance to various chemicals, it is ideal for numerous applications, most notably in automobile trim and appliance components.
- Grade 430F is the free-machining variant of this grade, available in bar form for use in automatic screw machines. Additionally, Grade 434, enriched with molybdenum, shares the beneficial characteristics of Grade 430, with the molybdenum component further enhancing its corrosion resistance.
- ASTM A240/A240M outlines the specifications for 430 in flat rolled products, including plates, sheets, and coils. Other forms, such as forgings and bars, possess similar yet distinct properties as per their specifications. The attributes of Grade 430F are specified for bar form in ASTM A582.

CORROSION RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 material demonstrates excellent resistance to a variety of corrosive environments, including certain organic acids. Maximum corrosion resistance is achieved when the material is highly polished or ground. Its resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion is comparable to Grade 304. Like all ferritic grades, 430 exhibits superior resistance to stress corrosion cracking.
- The non-free-machining Grade 430F shows significantly reduced resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, similar to other high-sulfur free-machining grades.
HEAT RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 withstands oxidation up to 870°C in intermittent service and up to 815°C in continuous service. However, extended heating in the 400-600°C range can cause brittleness at room temperature, which can be alleviated through annealing.
HEAT TREATMENT:
- Solution Annealing: Heat to 815-845°C, hold for ½ hour per 25mm of thickness, then slow furnace cool to 600°C before quickly air cooling. Slow cooling from 540-400°C may result in embrittlement.
- Sub-Critical Anneal: Heat to 760-815°C, then air cool or water quench.
- This grade is not hardenable by thermal treatment.
WELDING:
- Pre-heat to 150-200°C if welding is necessary.
- The embrittlement within the weld metal and the heat-affected zone can be effectively relieved by performing a post-weld anneal at temperatures between 790-815°C.
- Note that grain refinement will not be achieved.
MACHINING:
- Machining this material is easier compared to the standard austenitic grades like 304.
- However, there is still a tendency for galling and material pick-up on the cutting tool.
- Bars that have been lightly drawn offer superior machinability compared to those in the annealed state.
- Grade 430F, a free-machining variant of 430, is significantly easier to machine.
FABRICATION:
- The lower work hardening rate makes bending and forming operations somewhat easier than with grade 304.
- However, the lower ductility restricts the extent to which severe operations can be performed.
- For severe bends, ensure the bend axis is at right angles to the rolling direction for optimal results.
- Severe cold heading operations on 430 wire are feasible.
