GENERAL PROPERTIES
Duplex 2205 is a high-performance, dual-phase stainless steel that combines ferritic and austenitic properties. With 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel, it stands as the most widely utilized duplex grade. Boasting double the yield strength of standard austenitic grades, Duplex 2205 excels with outstanding fatigue strength and offers unparalleled resistance to stress corrosion cracking, crevice, pitting, erosion, and overall corrosion in severely demanding environments.

CORROSION RESISTANCE
- Duplex 2205's elevated chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content provide superior corrosion resistance compared to 316 and 316L grades, effective across most environments.
- Its alloy composition ensures high resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, even in challenging oxidizing and acidic conditions.
- Exceptionally resistant to chloride stress corrosion cracking and withstands temperatures up to approximately 302°F (150°C).
- The ferritic component ensures robust performance of Duplex 2205 in caustic environments.
HEAT RESISTANCE
- Duplex 2205, akin to other duplex stainless steels, showcases commendable oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures.
- Prone to embrittlement at temperatures above 572°F (300°C), even for short durations, hence not recommended for use above this threshold.
WELDING CHARACTERISTICS
- Exhibits excellent weldability.
- Generally should not be welded without filler metal to avoid excessive ferrite formation.
HEAT TREATMENT
- Annealing temperature range is 1868 to 2012°F (1020 to 1100°C).
- Not hardenable via heat treatment, but does work-harden.
- Special care is required to offset the higher coefficient of thermal expansion, preventing warping and distortion.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING
- Manufacturers generally recommend a maximum hot forming temperature between 2010 and 2100°F (1100 to 1150°C). During shaping, ensure even temperature distribution to avoid cracking, particularly if the workpiece has non-compact edges.
PROCESSING - COLD FORMING
- Duplex 2205 stainless steel showcases impressive formability across various fabrications. Its notable high strength, while advantageous, can present challenges. Even well-powered equipment must be adjusted to account for the increased spring-back caused by this grade's exceptional strength.
MACHINABILITY
Processing Duplex 2205 is slightly more demanding compared to the 300 series austenitic stainless steels. It requires higher cutting forces, leading to quicker tool wear. Key machining guidelines include: A) Utilize powerful, rigid machines with extremely firm mounting of tools and workpieces, B) Reduce vibration by keeping tool extensions short, C) Employ a nose radius on the tool, no longer than necessary, for sharp-edged carbides while ensuring enough strength, and D) Design machining sequences to ensure a depth of cut below the work-hardened layer from previous passes.
Features of 2205 Stainless Steel Coils
- Type 2205 is a duplex (austenitic/ferritic) stainless steel alloyed with chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen, enhancing performance and corrosion resistance compared to 304 and 316 stainless steels. Its dispersed austenite/ferrite microstructure, combined with alloying additives, provides resistance to stress corrosion cracking, pitting, and ***-induced crevice corrosion. Alloy 2205 withstands oxidation up to 980°C for specific applications but may become brittle when exposed to temperatures between 300°C and 1000°C over extended periods. It is versatile for various applications, available in strip, coil, and sheet forms.
What are the commonly used surfaces of stainless steel coils?
The surface finish of 201 stainless steel coils varies based on cold rolling processing methods and post-rolling surface treatments. These treatments include NO.1, 2B, 4, HL, 6, 8, BA, TR hard, heavy rolling bright 2H, polished bright, and others:
- NO.1: This surface results from hot rolling, heat treatment, and pickling of stainless steel strips to remove black oxide scale formed during these processes. The No. 1 surface is silvery-white and matte, primarily used in heat-resistant and corrosion-resistant industries where high surface gloss is not required, such as the alcohol, chemical industries, and large containers.
- 2B: The 2B surface, unlike the 2D surface, is smoothed by a light roller, resulting in a brighter finish. The surface roughness Ra value ranges from 0.1 to 0.5μm, suitable for a wide array of processes. This adaptable surface is ideal for industries like chemical, papermaking, petroleum, medical, and fields such as building curtain walls.
- TR hard surface: TR stainless steel, also known as hard steel, includes grades like 304 and 301. It is used for applications requiring high strength and hardness, such as railway vehicles, conveyor belts, springs, and washers. The work hardening characteristics of austenitic stainless steel are utilized to enhance the strength and hardness of steel plates through cold working methods like rolling. Unlike the smooth 2B base surface, hard material undergoes gentle rolling without annealing post-rolling, resulting in the TR hard surface.
- Re-rolled bright 2H: After the meticulous rolling operation, the stainless steel strip undergoes a bright annealing process. Utilizing a continuous annealing line, the strip is rapidly cooled, traveling at an impressive speed of 60-80m/min. This sophisticated procedure results in a 2H re-rolled bright surface finish, ensuring a lustrous and impeccable quality.
- No. 4: The No. 4 surface boasts excellent polishing properties, offering a brightness surpassing No. 3. This finish is achieved by polishing a cold-rolled stainless steel plate with a 2D or 2B surface, followed by a sanding process using a belt with a grit size of 150-180#. The resulting surface roughness (Ra) ranges between 0.2 and 1.5μm. Ideal for a wide array of applications, the No. 4 surface is extensively utilized in restaurants, cooking equipment, medical apparatus, architectural decorations, and container manufacturing.
- HL: The HL surface, commonly known as the hairline finish, is precisely defined by the Japanese JIS standard. It features a continuous hairline abrasive texture achieved with a 150-240# abrasive belt. While the Chinese GB3280 standard lacks explicit specifications, the HL finish is highly favored for architectural decorations including elevators, escalators, and external walls.
- No. 6: The No. 6 surface is an enhanced version of the No. 4, polished with a Tampico brush or W63 grit abrasive as per the GB2477 standard. This finish provides excellent metallic luster, a soft appearance, and minimal reflection, making it ideal for curtain walls, tassel decorations, and culinary supplies.
- BA: BA, or Bright Annealed surface, is achieved through bright heat treatment post cold rolling. This annealing in a protective atmosphere prevents oxidation, preserving the cold-rolled surface's gloss. Further polishing with a high-precision roller enhances the brightness, achieving a surface roughness of 0.05-0.1μm, close to a mirror finish. BA surfaces are versatile, suitable for food utensils, household appliances, medical equipment, automotive components, and decorative uses.
- No. 8: The No. 8 surface, also known as the mirror surface, offers maximum reflectivity and a particle-free finish. Referred to as the 8K board in the stainless steel deep processing industry, BA material serves as the base for mirror processing. Post-polishing, the surface exhibits stunning beauty, making it a popular choice for building entrances and interior decorations.
