What Is Duplex 2507 Stainless Steel?

Duplex 2507 stainless steel is a top-tier, super duplex material renowned for its exceptional low carbon content (up to 0.03%), combined with chromium (~25%), nickel (~7%), and molybdenum (~4%). Engineered to meet the stringent demands of applications that require outstanding strength and high corrosion resistance, Duplex 2507 is ideally suited for chemical process equipment, the petrochemical industry, and seawater systems. Its superior resistance to chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking, coupled with high levels of chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen, ensures excellent defense against pitting, crevice, and general corrosion.

How Is Duplex 2507 Stainless Steel Made?

  • The production of Duplex 2507 stainless steel mirrors that of other advanced high-alloy steels. The process begins with melting scrap steel in an electric arc furnace and adding the necessary alloys. The molten steel is then transferred to an AOD (argon oxygen decarburization) converter, where critical steps like decarburization, sulfur refinement, and the removal of dissolved gases take place.
  • During the AOD process, nitrogen is incorporated into the steel. The material is subsequently moved to the ladle furnace, where inclusions are precisely modified.
  • Following these initial stages, the molten steel proceeds to the casting phase, producing either individual ingots (large metal blocks) or continuously cast blooms. These solid steel forms are further processed through reheating and forging or rolling to the required thickness. To ensure a uniform internal structure, a solution annealing heat treatment is performed, followed by rapid water quenching.
  • Fabrication of Duplex 2507 pipe materials can be achieved through both hot and cold forming techniques. For hot forming, the ideal temperature range is between 1024°C and 1232°C. Post hot forming, a solution annealing process at 1052-1125°C is recommended, followed by swift water quenching. Cold forming processes, such as bending, deep drawing, extruding, and pressing, necessitate subsequent heat treatment, including solution annealing and quenching.

  • Duplex 2507 stainless steel stands out as a super duplex stainless steel, featuring a balanced microstructure of ferrite and austenite. This dual-phase composition combines the best attributes of both phases, offering unparalleled corrosion resistance and mechanical strength. While various duplex steel grades present different levels of corrosion resistance, Duplex 2507 excels in pitting, crevice, and stress corrosion cracking resistance. Duplex stainless steels are categorized into four groups based on their PREN (Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number) range, with super duplex stainless steel like Duplex 2507 boasting a PREN between 38 and 45.
