GENERAL PROPERTIES
Duplex 2205 is a superior two-phase, ferritic-austenitic stainless steel, enriched with 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel. This remarkable alloy is the most sought-after duplex stainless steel grade, boasting a yield strength twice that of standard austenitic grades. It excels in fatigue strength and offers outstanding resistance to stress corrosion cracking, as well as exceptional protection against crevice, pitting, erosion, and general corrosion in demanding environments.

CORROSION RESISTANCE
- With its elevated chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content, Duplex 2205 surpasses 316 and 316L in corrosion resistance across most environments.
- Its composition also ensures excellent resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, even in oxidizing and acidic conditions.
- Duplex 2205 showcases robust resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking and can withstand temperatures up to approximately 302°F (150°C).
- The ferrite phase in Duplex 2205 ensures good performance in caustic environments, providing reliable protection.
HEAT RESISTANCE
- Duplex 2205 exhibits commendable oxidation resistance at high temperatures, akin to other duplex stainless steels.
- However, it is prone to embrittlement at temperatures above 572°F (300°C), even for brief exposures. Therefore, it is not recommended for use above this threshold.
WELDING CHARACTERISTICS
- Exceptional weldability characterizes Duplex 2205.
- Generally, it should not be welded without filler metal to avoid excessive ferrite formation.
HEAT TREATMENT
- The annealing process should be conducted within the temperature range of 1868 to 2012°F (1020 to 1100°C).
- While Duplex 2205 cannot be hardened through heat treatment, it does work-harden effectively.
- Special considerations must be taken to counterbalance its higher coefficient of thermal expansion, thereby preventing warping and distortion.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING
- Producers generally recommend a maximum hot forming temperature between 2010 and 2100°F (1100 to 1150°C). For non-compact workpieces, caution is advised as cooler edges could lead to cracking.
PROCESSING - COLD FORMING
- Duplex 2205 boasts impressive formability across a range of fabrications. However, its remarkable strength can introduce certain challenges. Even with adequately powered equipment, the higher spring-back associated with Duplex 2205's enhanced strength must be accounted for, ensuring precise and effective handling.
MACHINABILITY
Processing Duplex 2205 can be more challenging compared to the 300 series austenitic stainless steels due to its need for higher cutting forces, leading to increased tool wear. Here are some essential machining guidelines: A) Employ powerful, rigid machines with extremely strong and stable mounting for both tools and workpieces, B) Minimize vibration by maintaining the shortest possible tool extension, C) Utilize a nose radius on the tool that is just long enough to ensure strength for carbides with a sharp edge, and D) Design machining sequences to maintain a depth of cut that penetrates below the work-hardened layer from previous passes.
Features of 2205 Stainless Steel Coils
- Type 2205 is a duplex (austenitic/ferritic) stainless steel enriched with chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen. This unique composition significantly enhances performance and corrosion resistance compared to 304 and 316 stainless steels. The alloy's balanced austenite/ferrite microstructure and its alloying elements provide exceptional resistance to stress corrosion cracking, pitting, and ***-induced crevice corrosion. While Alloy 2205 can withstand oxidation up to 980°C, it is crucial to note that prolonged exposure to temperatures between 300°C and 1000°C can cause brittleness. This versatile steel is available in strip, coil, and sheet forms and supports a diverse range of applications.
What are the commonly used surfaces of stainless steel coils?
The surface finish of 201 stainless steel coils can vary based on cold rolling processing methods and subsequent surface treatments. Popular surface treatments include NO.1, 2B, 4, HL, 6, 8, BA, TR hard, heavy rolling bright 2H, polished bright, and more:
- NO.1: NO.1 surface is achieved through hot rolling, heat treatment, and pickling of stainless steel strips, which removes black oxide scale. This matte, silvery white surface is predominantly used in heat and corrosion-resistant industries that do not require high surface gloss, such as the alcohol industry, chemical sectors, and large container fabrication.
- 2B: The 2B surface, in contrast to the 2D surface, is smoothed by a light roller to achieve a brighter finish. The surface roughness Ra value typically ranges from 0.1 to 0.5μm. This versatile surface is suited for a wide array of industries, including chemical, papermaking, petroleum, medical, and architectural applications such as building curtain walls.
- TR Hard Surface: TR stainless steel, often referred to as hard steel, includes grades like 304 and 301. It's ideal for applications requiring high strength and hardness, such as railway vehicles, conveyor belts, springs, and washers. The work hardening characteristics of austenitic stainless steel are leveraged to enhance steel strength and hardness through cold working techniques like rolling. The TR hard surface is the result of rolling the hard material by a few percent to tens of percent without subsequent annealing, resulting in a distinct finish from the 2B base surface.
- Re-Rolled Bright 2H: After the rolling operation, the stainless steel strip will be bright annealed. A continuous annealing line can be used to quickly cool the strip. The stainless steel strip travels along the line at a speed of 60-80m/min. After this process, the surface finish will be 2H re-rolled bright.
- No. 4: The No. 4 surface has a good polishing effect and is brighter than No. 3. It can also be obtained by polishing the cold-rolled stainless steel plate with a 2D or 2B surface, and then polishing the processed surface with a sanding belt with a particle size of 150-180#. The tool measures the surface roughness (Ra) between 0.2 and 1.5μm. The No. 4 surface is widely used in restaurants and cooking equipment, medical equipment, architectural decoration, containers and other applications.
- HL: The HL surface is often called a hairline finish. The Japanese JIS standard specifies a continuous hairline abrasive surface obtained by polishing with a 150-240# abrasive belt. The restrictions under the Chinese GB3280 standard are unclear. HL surface finish is commonly used for architectural decoration, such as elevators, escalators, and exterior walls.
- No. 6: The No. 6 surface is further polished on the basis of No. 4 with a Tampico brush or a W63 grit abrasive material specified in the GB2477 standard. The surface has good metallic luster, softness, weak reflection, and no imaging. Due to its good performance, it is very suitable for curtain walls, tassel decoration, and cooking supplies.
- BA: BA is a surface that is brightly heat treated after cold rolling. Bright heat treatment is annealing in a protective atmosphere to ensure that the surface is not oxidized and retain the gloss of the cold-rolled surface, and then it is polished with a high-precision smooth roller to improve the surface brightness. The instrument evaluates the surface roughness to be 0.05-0.1μm, indicating that the surface is close to a mirror surface. BA surfaces can be used in a variety of applications, including food utensils, household appliances, medical equipment, automotive parts, and decorations.
- No. 8: Mirror surface, maximum reflectivity, no abrasive particles. The stainless steel deep processing industry also refers to 8K board. BA material is often used as raw material for mirror processing. It only needs to be polished. The surface is beautiful after mirror processing and is often used in building entrances and interior decoration.
