GENERAL PROPERTIES
- Grade 430 is a ferritic, straight chromium, non-hardenable grade that uniquely blends superb corrosion resistance with outstanding formability and practical mechanical properties. Its robustness makes it ideal for various chemical applications, while it is most commonly employed in automobile trims and appliance components due to its exceptional durability.
- Grade 430F is the free-machining variant of this grade, available in bar form for use in automatic screw machines. Grade 434 is the molybdenum-enriched counterpart of Grade 430, sharing the same advantageous characteristics. The inclusion of molybdenum enhances its corrosion resistance.
- ASTM A240/A240M outlines the properties of Grade 430 for flat rolled products (plate, sheet, and coil). Other products such as forgings and bar feature similar but not identical properties, as specified in their respective standards. The characteristics of Grade 430F are detailed for bar form in ASTM A582.

CORROSION RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 material displays commendable resistance to a wide array of corrosive environments, including some organic acids. The highest corrosion resistance levels are achieved when the material is highly polished or ground. Its resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion is on par with Grade 304. Similar to all ferritic grades, Grade 430 exhibits excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking.
- The non-free machining variant, 430F, shows significantly reduced resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, akin to other high sulfur free machining grades.
HEAT RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 withstands oxidation up to 870°C in intermittent service and 815°C in continuous service. Extended heating in the 400-600°C range may cause the grade to become brittle at room temperature, which can be mitigated through annealing.
HEAT TREATMENT:
- Solution Annealing - Heat to 815-845°C, hold for 30 minutes per 25mm of thickness, slow furnace cool to 600°C, then quickly air cool. Slow cooling from 540-400°C can cause embrittlement.
- Sub-Critical Annealing - Heat to 760-815°C, then air cool or water quench.
- This grade is not hardenable by thermal treatment.
WELDING:
- Pre-heat to 150-200°C if welding is required.
- Embrittlement in the weld metal and heat-affected zone can be effectively relieved through a post-weld anneal process, carefully conducted at a temperature range of 790-815°C.
- Grain refinement will not occur under the given conditions.
MACHINING:
- Easier to machine than the standard austenitic grades such as 304, providing superior efficiency and productivity.
- However, there remains a tendency for galling and material pick-up on the cutting tool, which should be managed carefully.
- Bars that have been lightly drawn exhibit enhanced machinability compared to those in the annealed condition.
- Grade 430F, the free-machining variant of 430, is significantly easier to machine, offering notable improvements in processing.
FABRICATION:
- A lower work hardening rate simplifies bending and forming processes compared to grade 304, making fabrication more manageable.
- However, lower ductility limits the feasibility of very severe operations.
- Severe bends should be executed with the bend axis aligned at right angles to the rolling direction for optimal results.
- Severe cold heading of 430 wire is achievable, demonstrating the material's versatility.
