904 alloy (N08904) stainless steel is a high-alloy austenitic product engineered to endure severe corrosion. It showcases exceptional corrosion resistance.
904L stainless steel is a non-stabilized austenitic stainless steel characterized by a low carbon level. This high alloy contains copper, enhancing its resistance to strong reducing acids like sulfuric acid. 904L stainless steel also resists stress corrosion, cracking, and crevice corrosion. It is non-magnetic and boasts outstanding formability, toughness, and weldability. The grade contains high levels of costly elements, such as molybdenum and nickel, contributing to its superior performance.
904L grade stainless steel excels in hot seawater and chloride-rich environments. The high nickel content enhances its resistance to stress corrosion cracking. Copper addition improves resilience against sulfuric acid and other reducing agents, in diverse environments. The corrosion resistance of 904L grade steel surpasses standard 316L steel and aligns closely with super austenitic steels containing 6% molybdenum. To achieve peak resistance to stress corrosion cracking in sensitive settings, post-cold working solution treatment is essential.

The Grade 904L stainless steel tube stands out with its remarkable resistance to warm seawater and chloride attacks. This exceptional resistance is attributed to the high nickel content in its composition, which also enhances its ability to withstand stress corrosion cracking. Additionally, the inclusion of copper bolsters its resilience against sulphuric acid and other reducing agents, making it ideal for both aggressive and mild conditions.
Grade 904L's corrosion resistance positions it between super austenitic grades with 6% molybdenum content and standard 316L austenitic grades. Although it is less resistant than the molybdenum-free grades 304L and 310L, solution treatment following cold working can maximize its stress corrosion cracking resistance, even in critical environments.
Grade 904L stainless steels are known for their commendable oxidation resistance. However, it's important to note that the structural stability of this grade deteriorates at high temperatures, especially beyond 400°C.
For Grade 904L stainless steels, solution heat treatment can be carried out at temperatures ranging from 1090 to 1175°C, followed by rapid cooling. This thermal treatment is effective for hardening these grades.
Grade 904L stainless steels can be welded using all conventional methods without the need for pre-heat and post-weld heat treatments. However, they can be prone to hot cracking in constrained weldments. Specialized electrodes and rods, compliant with AS 1554.6, are recommended for welding 904L steels.
Grade 904L stainless steel tubes are distinguished by their high purity and low *** content. They are easily machinable using standard methods and can be cold-bent to small radii. While annealing is typically not required, it should be considered when fabrication involves severe stress corrosion cracking conditions.
Grade 904L stainless steel tubes find extensive applications in various industries, including:
