CORROSION RESISTANCE:

  • 316 stainless steel offers superior corrosion resistance compared to 304, thanks to its elevated levels of chromium and molybdenum.
    These elements enhance its durability in a variety of corrosive environments.
  • It remains susceptible to pitting and crevice corrosion in warm chloride settings, and stress corrosion cracking above 122°F (50°C).
  • 316 stainless steel is considered potable water-resistant with chloride levels up to 1000mg/L at ambient temperatures, reducing to 500mg/L at
    140°F (60°C).
  • Often referred to as marine grade stainless steel, 316 is generally corrosion-resistant but not suitable for warm seawater environments.

HEAT RESISTANCE:

  • 316 stainless steel exhibits excellent oxidation resistance, tolerating intermittent service up to 1600°F (870°C) and continuous service up to 1700°F (925°C).
  • Grade 316L, with its lower carbon content, is more resistant to carbide precipitation.

WELDING CHARACTERISTICS:

  • 316 stainless steel can be welded by all standard fusion methods, with or without filler metals, offering exceptional weldability.
  • For maximum corrosion resistance, heavy welded sections of Grade 316 should undergo post-weld annealing, though this is not necessary for 316L.

HEAT TREATMENT:

  • The annealing temperature range for 316 stainless steel is between 1900°F to 2100°F (1038°C to 1149°C).
  • This grade cannot be hardened by heat treatment.
  • Special considerations must be made for its high thermal expansion coefficient to prevent warping and distortion during heat treatment.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

  • Most producers recommend forging within a maximum temperature range of 2100°F to 2300°F.
  • Do not forge below 1700°F (927°C).
  • Optimal corrosion resistance is achieved when the forged pieces receive a final annealing process.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

  • 316/316L stainless steel types are extremely tough and ductile, making them ideal for various cold working processes such as roll forming, swaging, cold heading, deep drawing,
    and bending with ease.
  • Severely cold-formed parts should be annealed to alleviate stress.

MACHINABILITY:

  • 316/316L stainless steel is more challenging to machine compared to 304 due to its toughness.
  • It produces tough and strong chip characteristics.
  • Using chip breakers and curlers is recommended.
  • Employ large tools and substantial cutting fluid for best results.
  • Consider heavy positive feeds at low speeds to counteract rapid work hardening.
