CORROSION RESISTANCE Alloy 2205 boasts excellent resistance to chloride-induced pitting and stress corrosion cracking.
ELEVATED TEMPERATURE RESISTANCE The ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code sets an upper temperature limit of 600°F (315°C). Prolonged exposure to higher temperatures can result in embrittlement.
MECHANICAL PROPERTIES Alloy 2205 offers more than twice the strength of conventional austenitic stainless steels when annealed. It can also be supplied in a cold-worked condition with yield strength surpassing 160 ksi, maintaining good toughness even at temperatures as low as -50°F (-10°C).
WORKABILITY Alloy 2205 is amenable to cold forming but has a high work-hardening rate, necessitating intermediate anneals. Post-forming annealing is also recommended for optimal stress corrosion resistance.
Our forming capabilities are world-class, featuring advanced extrusion and cold working assets for tube and pipe manufacturing. We proudly house one of the world's largest pilger mills and a unique hydroforming process for precision fittings.

Duplex 2205 stainless steel pipe is an exceptional duplex ferritic-austenitic stainless steel. Comprising 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel, it stands as the most prevalent duplex grade. This robust alloy offers a yield strength twice that of standard austenitics, along with outstanding fatigue strength. Additionally, it displays remarkable resistance to stress corrosion cracking, crevice, pitting, erosion, and general corrosion even under the most challenging conditions.
For hot forming, manufacturers typically recommend maintaining temperatures between 2010 and 2100°F (1100 and 1150°C). If the workpiece is not uniformly heated, cooler edges may ***.
The Duplex 2205 Stainless Steel Tube excels in formability across various manufacturing processes despite its high strength, which can present some challenges. The exceptional strength of Duplex 2205 necessitates consideration of higher springback. Even with powerful equipment, this increased springback must be managed for optimal outcomes.
Machining Duplex 2205 is slightly more challenging than working with 300 series austenitic stainless steels. It requires greater cutting forces, leading to quicker tool wear. Follow these machining guidelines for superior results: A) Utilize a robust, rigid machine with firm tool and workpiece mounts; B) Keep tool extensions short to reduce vibration; C) Maintain a minimal tool nose radius to ensure a sharp carbide edge while retaining necessary strength; D) Design the machining sequence to ensure the depth of cut consistently penetrates below the work-hardened layer from the prior operation.
