431 Stainless Steel Bar Material provides exceptional resistance to a variety of corrosive environments. It exhibits moderate resistance in cold marine waters but may not be ideal for warm tropical conditions. Comparable to 304 Grade, its corrosion resistance is slightly lower. Optimal performance is achieved with a smooth surface in a hardened and tempered state.
This material withstands scaling in intermittent service up to 925°C and continuous service up to 870°C. However, usage above the tempering temperature is generally discouraged due to potential reductions in mechanical properties.
Full annealing is impractical for this grade as it hardens even with slow cooling. For Process Anneal, heat to 620-660°C and cool in air.
Hardening involves heating to 980-1065°C, holding for approximately 30 minutes, then quenching in air or oil. Pre-heating at 760-790°C is advisable for complex parts or pre-hardened components. Temper according to mechanical requirements at specified temperatures.
Avoid tempering between 425-600°C due to a decrease in impact toughness, although the effect is less significant compared to other martensitic grades.
Welding can be challenging due to *** susceptibility. Pre-heating at 200-300°C is recommended. While Grade 410 filler rod is suitable, Grades 308L, 309, or 310 provide more ductile welds if matching properties are non-essential. Post-weld heat treatment at 650°C is advisable.
In its annealed state, Grade 431 is relatively easy to machine. However, machining becomes more difficult when hardened above 30 HRC. The Ugima Improved Machinability version of Grade 431 significantly enhances machining speeds and tool life.
Common applications include nuts and bolts, propeller shafting, pump shafts, beater bars, and marine hardware.
These properties are specified for bar products under ASTM A276. Similar but not necessarily identical properties are defined for other forms such as plates and forgings in their respective standards.
