CORROSION RESISTANCE:

• Experience superior corrosion resistance compared to 304 in a wide range of atmospheric and corrosive environments, thanks to enhanced chromium
  and molybdenum content.
• While generally robust, it is vulnerable to pitting and crevice corrosion in warm chloride environments and may suffer stress corrosion cracking over 122°F (50°C).
• Boasts respectable resistance to potable water with up to 1000mg/L chlorides at ambient temperature, reducing to about 500mg/L at
  140°F (60°C).
• Often referred to as "marine grade stainless steel," it is, however, not impervious to warm seawater.

HEAT RESISTANCE:

• Exhibits excellent oxidation resistance up to 1600°F (870°C) intermittently and 1700°F (925°C) continuously.
• Grade 316L offers superior resistance to carbide precipitation.

WELDING CHARACTERISTICS:

• Displays exceptional weldability by all standard fusion techniques, both with and without filler metals.
• Heavy welded sections in Grade 316 require post-weld annealing for optimal corrosion resistance. This isn't necessary for Grade 316L.

HEAT TREATMENT:

• The annealing temperature range lies between 1900 to 2100°F (1038 to 1149°C).
• Cannot be hardened through heat treatment.
• Special consideration is necessary to counteract the higher coefficient of thermal expansion, preventing warping and distortion.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

• Most manufacturers recommend a maximum forging temperature between 2100°F and 2300°F.
• Do not forge below 1700°F (927°C). For optimal corrosion resistance, a final anneal after forging is advised.
• Corrosion resistance is maximized with a final anneal.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

• 316/316L types, known for their toughness and ductility, can be easily cold worked through roll forming, swaging, cold heading, deep drawing,
  bending, etc., with minimal difficulty.
• Severely cold-formed parts should undergo annealing to relieve stresses.

MACHINEABILITY:

• Type 316/316L is somewhat tougher to machine than Type 304 due to its robust characteristics.
• 316/316L produces tough and strong chip characteristics.
• Utilize chip breakers and curlers for optimal results.
• Employ as large a tool as feasible and use generous amounts of cutting fluid.
• Consider heavy positive feeds at low speeds as 316/316L work hardens swiftly.
