CORROSION RESISTANCE Alloy 2205 exhibits excellent resistance to chloride-induced pitting and stress corrosion cracking, making it ideal for marine and industrial applications.
ELEVATED TEMPERATURE RESISTANCE The ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code sets an upper-temperature limit of 600°F (315°C). Prolonged exposure beyond this leads to embrittlement, highlighting the need for precise thermal management.
MECHANICAL PROPERTIES Alloy 2205 offers over twice the strength of conventional austenitic stainless steels in its annealed state. It can also be cold-worked to achieve a yield strength exceeding 160 ksi, maintaining good toughness even at temperatures down to -50°F (-10°C).
WORKABILITY Alloy 2205 can be cold-formed, but its high work-hardening rate may necessitate intermediate annealing. Post-forming annealing is also recommended to achieve optimal stress corrosion resistance.
Our forming capabilities are second to none, featuring advanced extrusion and cold working assets for tube and pipe manufacturing. We proudly operate one of the world's largest pilger mills and utilize a unique hydroforming process for achieving precision fittings.

Duplex 2205 stainless steel pipe is a superior duplex ferritic-austenitic stainless steel comprising 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel. Renowned as the most widely utilized duplex stainless steel, it boasts double the yield strength of standard austenitic grades. Its exceptional fatigue strength and remarkable resistance to stress corrosion cracking, crevice corrosion, pitting, erosion, and general corrosion make it ideal for severe environments.
Most manufacturers recommend a maximum hot forming temperature of 2010 to 2100°F (1100 to 1150°C). If the workpiece is not uniform, the edges might cool faster than the bulk, risking cracks in these cooler areas.
Duplex 2205 Stainless Steel Tube showcases excellent formability across various manufacturing processes. However, its high strength may pose challenges. Even with powerful equipment, the significant springback caused by this grade's strength must be considered. This ensures precision in the final product.
Duplex 2205 is slightly more challenging to machine compared to the 300 series austenitic stainless steels. It demands higher cutting forces, leading to quicker tool wear. Follow these machining guidelines for optimal results: A) Utilize a robust, rigid machine with strong tool and workpiece mounts; B) Minimize tool extensions to reduce vibration; C) Keep the tool nose radius as short as possible to maintain a sharp carbide edge while ensuring adequate strength; D) Sequence machining operations so that each cut remains below the work-hardened layer from the prior operation.
