CORROSION RESISTANCE:

• With superior resistance compared to 304, our 316 stainless steel thrives in a variety of atmospheric environments and many corrosive media, thanks to its elevated chromium and molybdenum content.

HEAT RESISTANCE:

WELDING CHARACTERISTICS:

• Enjoy superior weldability with all standard fusion methods, whether using filler metals or not.
• For heavy welded sections in Grade 316, post-weld annealing ensures maximum corrosion resistance. This step is unnecessary for Grade 316L.

HEAT TREATMENT:

• The annealing temperature ranges from 1900 to 2100°F (1038 to 1149°C).
• Heat treatment cannot harden this material.
• Special consideration is necessary to manage its higher coefficient of thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

• Most producers recommend a maximum forging temperature between 2100°F and 2300°F.
• Do not forge below 1700°F (927°C). Optimal
• corrosion resistance is achieved if forgings undergo a final anneal.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

• 316/316L types, known for their toughness and ductility, are excellent for cold working processes such as roll forming, swaging, cold heading,
  deep drawing, bending, and more without issue.
• Severe cold forming should be followed by annealing to relieve stress.

MACHINEABILITY:

• Due to its toughness, Type 316/316L is slightly more challenging to machine than Type 304.
• 316/316L produces strong and tough chip characteristics.
• Utilize chip breakers and curlers for optimal results.
• Employ the largest possible tool and abundant cutting fluid.
• Consider heavy positive feeds at low speeds since 316/316L work hardens rapidly.
