Type 409 Stainless Steel (UNS S40900) is a stabilized ferritic stainless steel renowned for its superior oxidation and corrosion resistance compared to carbon steel. Unless otherwise specified by the purchaser, any of these compositions may be supplied as UNS S40900. This stainless steel is also available with enhanced formability properties, known in the industry as 'High Performance' or 'Ultra Form'.

Grade 409
- Grade 409 is a titanium-stabilized ferritic stainless steel, renowned for its high utility in automotive exhaust systems. As a general-purpose chromium stainless steel, Grade 409 excels in applications demanding excellent mechanical qualities, commendable corrosion resistance, and superior weldability, especially under high-temperature conditions.
- ASTM requirements now categorize Grade 409 into sub-grades S40910, S40920, and S40930 under ASTM A240M for flat-rolled steel, replacing the generic Grade 409 classification.
- These sub-grades are stabilized to varying degrees with either titanium, niobium, or a blend of both. Any of these can be certified as S40900 (Grade 409). However, ASTM A268M solely lists the standard Grade 409 for tubular applications.
Corrosion Resistance:
- Grade 409 offers impressive resistance to atmospheric and exhaust gas corrosion. Typically, a thin layer of surface rust forms, acting as a protective barrier against further corrosion-though not ideal for aesthetic purposes. Its corrosion resistance mirrors that of 3CR12 and 12% chromium martensitic grades like 410, yet is inferior to the 17% chromium grade 430.
Heat Resistance
- Grade 409 demonstrates excellent scaling resistance in intermittent service environments up to 815°C and continuous service up to 675°C. These limits are subject to variation based on specific service conditions.
Heat Treatment
- For annealing, heat Grade 409 to 790-900°C and cool with air. Note that this grade cannot be toughened through heat treatment.
Welding
- Grade 409 is easy to weld, with a recommended pre-heat of 150-260°C. While Grade 409 or 430 electrodes or filler rods are suitable, Grade 309 rods or electrodes, pre-qualified per AS 1554.6, are preferred for producing more ductile welds.
- Post-weld annealing at 760-815°C enhances weld ductility, ensuring robust performance.
Welding small sections typically doesn't necessitate post-weld annealing. Automotive exhaust tubing is often welded without filler metal (autogenously).
To mitigate grain formation impacts, welding should be performed with minimal heat input.
Typical Applications
Key applications include automotive exhaust systems like catalytic converters and mufflers.

- ASTM A268M details the parameters for annealed Grade 409 tubing, while ASTM A240M outlines the composition for other grades applicable to coil and sheet forms. Different products might have similar, though not identical, specifications.
FORMING:
- Grade 409 stainless can be effortlessly cut, blanked, stretch-formed, and drawn. Its formability is quite comparable to carbon steel.
